A student at a Pennsylnania college apparently choked to death on gum.
Here I'd one link about self-applying the Heimlich maneuver:

FYI
If you are thinking 'Well duh.', you shouldn't. People really panic and having a plan in mind could save you.

(16,423 posts)The overall method is to force the patient to breathe out suddenly and forcefully. (There is always some leftover air in your lung, even if you breathe out.)
In the Heimlich maneuver you hold the back fixed and you compress from the front.
I learned a maneuver to hold the chest fixed and to slap the patient on the back. (1. with a flat hand, 2. the area where the shoulder-blades end, 3. one slap as hard as you can)
I once saw a nurse treating a choking and coughing old man who was lying in bed. He was choking on his food and struggling to keep breathing and she patted him on the chest with quick slaps. I was horrified, but I thought "She's the nurse, she knows what she's doing." and I didn't want to get into trouble.
Next time, you are coughing, slap yourself on the chest. See if you like it...

Doctors said Reed may have saved his wifes life after she suffered the seizure at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort. He heard some splashing and called out to her. When she didnt respond, Reed went into the bathroom and found his wife submerged. He pulled her out of the water, and gave Justine the Heimlich maneuver. She was taken to NCH, then discharged Wednesday night. Her doctor came out during the front nine Thursday to tell Reed that his wife was doing well.
