Neo-fascist op-ed...New York Times! French far-right call-to-arms...

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/01/19/opinion/marine-le-pen-france-was-attacked-by-islamic-fundamentalism.html

Marine Le Pen is president of the National Front party (extreme Right Wing) in France.

"For now, one emergency measure can readily be put into action: Stripping jihadists of their French citizenship is an absolute necessity."
...

"Laurent Fabius (French Foreign Minister) no longer even dares pronounce the real name of things.

Mr. Fabius will not describe as “Islamists” the terrorists who on Wednesday, Jan. 7, walked into the offices of the newspaper Charlie Hebdo, right in the heart of Paris.

Nor will he use “Islamic State” to describe the radical Sunni group that now controls territory in Syria and Iraq. No reference can be made to “Islamic fundamentalism,” for fear that Islam and Islamism might get conflated.
...

"Second, the massive waves of immigration, both legal and clandestine, our country has experienced for decades have prevented the implementation of a proper assimilation policy."

Wow, sound familiar? She's kicking things into high gear now to capitalize on the tragedy.

how about we stop identifying people by their religion altogether? how would you feel, M. Le Pen, if you were called upon to defend every slight, every sin, every crime committed by any french person, any christian, any white person? people just want to live their lives.

1. France’s Le Pen Says Torture Can Be ‘Useful’ to Fight Terrorism

The leader of France’s anti-immigrant, anti-European Union National Front, Marine Le Pen, said that torture can be sometimes “useful” to fight terrorism, in response the U.S. Senate report on the CIA.

“There can be cases -- when there is a bomb ticking, that can explode in an hour or two and kill 200 or 300 civilians -- where it can be useful to have to make someone talk with the means available,” Le Pen told RMC radio and BFM Television today.

2. Marine Le Pen: Muslims in France 'like Nazi occupation'

Marine Le Pen, the leader of the French far-Right, drew heavy criticism after she said Muslims praying outside were like Nazi occupiers.

3. The Attack on Charlie Hebdo Plays Right Into Marine Le Pen's Hands

An additional dimension to this tragedy (attack on Charlie Hebdo) is that it plays directly into the hands of those public figures and politicians who would like to see France regress into an organic national community of blood ties, rather than of citizens. The Islamic extremists who executed the attack on Charlie Hebdo may have murdered journalists and artists, but surely their crime is also against other Muslims in France, who are now likely to be viewed as enemy aliens hostile to the essence of the Republic itself, regardless of their own beliefs. Michel Houellebecq, for instance, who often paints Muslims as a dangerous fifth column, might now perhaps be vindicated in the eyes of unreflective readers; and, in the words of one Lebanese blogger, today might very well be the day that Marine Le Pen became President of France. Le Pen, by the way, has compared the Muslim presence in France to the German occupation of the 1940s. After today, we can only hope that others will not start doing the same.

appealing to people's prejudices?

Demagoguery is an appeal to people that plays on their emotions and prejudices rather than on their rational side.

Thank you for more information on Marine Le Pen, napkinz.

I did read Hollande's numbers were up because of the way he's handling the crisis, though.

Exposes her for what she really is: a neo-fascist with nazi sympathies. Unfortunately, there is a growing segment of the French electorate who hear her poisonous, siren message.

Predominately small-town conservatives in the south of France, who don't even know any Muslims, North Africans or Blacks, and who are in no way threatened by jihadist violence.

And, great cartoon, by the way. Love the teeth!
