OAKLAND, Calif. Protesters made their way on the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge and are blocking westbound lanes this evening, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The group made their way on eastbound and westbound lanes of state Highway 92 on the bridge around 4:50 p.m., CHP Officer Peter Van Eckhardt said.
As of shortly after 5 p.m., eastbound lanes were reopened for motorists heading to Hayward, but westbound lanes were still closed off for cars traveling to Foster City, Van Eckhardt said.
There were 30 CHP patrol units sent to the bridge to clear the protesters.

(68,644 posts)Miles away from any transit stop that I know of, or public services.
They'd have to walk all the way there or be dropped off and then what?
The San Mateo Bridge just seems like a dopey place to protest.
I guess they just want to tie shit up and piss people off and cause a lot of auto pollution and traffic.
Assholes.

The surface is smooth and I find the tollbooth attendants very friendly!

(68,644 posts)More than 100 Stanford University students and community members stormed the San Mateo-Hayward bridge in a "Reclaim MLK" rally late Monday afternoon, Jan. 19, to highlight injustices against African Americans.
The rally is to support the Ferguson Action's national demands, which include the demilitarization of local law enforcement and repurposing of law enforcement funds to support community-based alternatives to incarceration, Silicon Shutdown organizers said in a press release.
Hordes of protesters blocked the westbound side of the bridge for 28 minutes to symbolize the fact that every 28 hours a black person is killed by a police officer or vigilante, organizers said.
The demonstration is one of several events nationwide coinciding with the observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
"We are honoring MLK's legacy by forcefully reminding Silicon Valley that, decades after Martin Luther King, black lives, and brown lives, and the lives of all oppressed people, still matter," participant Maria Diaz said in the press release.

(5,252 posts)As if being stuck in traffic on a bridge isn't stressful enough for commuters, let's have these assholes aggravate people more while doing NOTHING to further their cause.
I'm picking up a friend in a couple of weeks from SFO and the thought of these idiots pulling this stunt is already giving me a migraine.
