There needs to be more than one kind of student loan forgiveness program.

This thread inspired me: http://www.democraticunderground.com/10026098778

A person ought to be able to have their loans forgiven by doing some work such as teaching in an area where it's very hard to get teachers, working in jobs that used to be done by VISTA (maybe still are), or even the military. Or working on weekends cleaning up highways.

If there already are some kind of forgiveness programs, please post.

but its very very difficult to qualify for them.

Better yet would be to make college affordable and not saddle our youth with 20 year loans that make having children or buying a home unaffordable while they service their loan. College didn't used to cost so much with previous generations able to afford college education by working summers or part time while in school. There used to be scholarships that were available that covered education costs for our brightest students. Scholarship money has not kept up with rising costs. Cheaper loans, forgiveness programs are weak sauce that don't address the real problem. College education costs are out of control making higher education unaffordable to more families everyday.
