Do you see major differences between the trials of Siegelman a Democrat and McDonnell a Republican?

RICHMOND, Va., Jan 13 (Reuters) - A federal judge on Tuesday rejected former Virginia Governor Robert McDonnell's request to remain free on bond pending his appeal of a two-year prison term for corruption convictions.

The former Republican governor, once mentioned as a possible vice presidential candidate, was convicted in September of 11 charges.

McDonnell and his wife Maureen were found guilty of taking $177,000 in loans, gifts and luxury goods from businessman Jonnie Williams Sr. in exchange for promoting his diet supplement company's main product, the anti-inflammatory Anatabloc. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/01/13/bob-mcdonnell-trial_n_6463834.html?utm_hp_ref=politics

Siegelman Hearing Scheduled Jan. 13 As Feds Impose 'Solitary'
Anniston Star (AL), Editorial: A gross injustice in sentencing, Editorial board, Jan. 7, 2015. Robert F. McDonnell, the man who served as Virginia’s governor from 2010 until 2014, was sentenced to 24 months in federal prison Tuesday. To say McDonnell was convicted of corruption is to tell only a fraction of the story surrounding his dealings while in office. Don Siegelman, former governor of Alabama, is serving a 78-month sentence in federal prison. Siegelman was convicted of trading a $500,000 contribution to the governor’s pro-statewide lottery campaign for a seat on a state board, a position the contributor, former HealthSouth CEO Richard Scrushy, had previously held. That is essentially the reason many U.S. ambassadors/ presidential contributors hold their posts. Same for how every governor fills out state boards across the United States. Yet, somehow Siegelman is the one serving more than seven years in prison. His term is scheduled to end in August 2017. McDonnell’s two-year sentence should conclude in February 2017, six months ahead of Siegelman’s release date. Smells like a gross injustice against Don Siegelman. http://www.justice-integrity.org/faq/778-siegelman-appellate-hearing-scheduled-jan-13-as-solitary-imprisonment-continues?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Feed:+JusticeIntegrityProject+%28Justice+Integrity+Project%29

From Prison to Montgomery

Early in December, the former governor of Alabama left Oakdale on the 4th, in high spirits, to be present at a Dec. 15th hearing in Montgomery. Traveling by BOP bus, CON Air One, and driven by Marshals in a car by way of Oklahoma City and Atlanta, he arrived in Montgomery eight days later on the 12th.

His supporters and high expectations crowded the courtroom on the day of the hearing in Montgomery. We had a new judge, a new lawyer, and new evidence. Don would leave the courthouse a free man; we were sure of it!

We first glimpsed the former Governor of Alabama when he was brought into the courtroom unkempt, in a grubby red-orange jumpsuit, shackled wrist and ankle, chained around the waist. His face lit up when he saw the crowded gallery and family members among them.

If you heard that Don Siegelman was detained in Montgomery so that he could be near his family, that is not true. Don remained in the Montgomery County Jail for 15 days after the hearing, through Christmas, without family visitation. His daughter, Dana, had even flown in from California, expecting to visit her Dad, without success.

Although Don could call people collect during the Montgomery stay, he had to sit on the floor to talk and pull the receiver through the bars to dial numbers he had memorized.

All but hermetically sealed in the Montgomery County Jail, he was not able to communicate with his lead attorneys in Washington, D.C.
