Ultra-Orthodox Jewish Newspaper Edits Female World Leaders Out of Charlie Hebdo Photo

Yesterday’s historic march across Paris included over 40 world leaders expressing solidarity for France after the Charlie Hebdo massacre, but if you read this Haredi newspaper, you’d believe that none of them were women.

The image that ran on the front page of the Israeli newspaper The Announcer edited two female world leaders out of the image, originally provided by wire service GPO: German Chancellor Angela Merkel and EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini. A third woman in a blue scarf who we can’t identify was also photoshopped out.

The original photo is below:

And here’s the paper’s version of it, screencapped by Walla.com. Merkel and Mystery Woman are gone completely, while Mogherini was simply cropped out of the photo:

In accord with our religious beliefs, we do not publish photos of women, which in no way relegates them to a lower status… Because of laws of modesty, we are not allowed to publish pictures of women, and we regret if this gives an impression of disparaging to women, which is certainly never our intention. We apologize if this was seen as offensive.

Everybody isn't going to like or agree with what is said, and defend or not.

I personally don't care about the Jewish newspaper. I am not an orthodox or any stripe of the Jewish faith. I will leave any boycotting or whatever to the Jewish community.

We've already asserted the universal right to "freedom of the press"--including its right to do stupid or offensive, or even lying, things. So some itsy ultra-conservative Orthodox newspaper did this. I think Charlie Hebdo needs to make a cartoon about it.

But in the end, no one was killed. So I'm not sure what the interesting point to be made here is. It's certainly not: ooh, look ... some newspaper picture is the equivalent of murdering terrorists and their organizations. Both Jihadists and Ultra-Orthodox (and many Fundamentalist Christians) have bad ideology. It's about murdering at the behest of that ideology that's the issue. That didn't happen with this picture.

The ones who averred that they were feminist freedom fighters who could never condone a religion that considered women to be 2nd class citizens.

This is definitely not over anyone being killed.

the part of this paper as utterly bogus bullshit?

Gotta give fundamentalist zealots of all stripes points for consistency - they all seem to consider women as something less than the dirt under their shoes. Fuck anyone who possesses this mindset.

I actually ran across this on a photography website, traced it to Mediate and thought it a suitable DU post.
