Jews are fleeing terror-hit Paris because of growing anti-Semitism in France, one of Britain's most influential Jewish journalists said today.
Stephen Pollard, editor of the Jewish Chronicle, spoke out after an Islamic terrorist took six people hostage and held them captive in a Kosher supermarket in the French capital.
This afternoon police ordered all shops in a famous Jewish neighborhood in central Paris to close.
The mayor's office in Paris announced the closure of shops along the Rosiers street in Paris' Marais neighborhood, in the heart of the tourist district and less than a mile away from the offices of satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo where 12 people were killed on Wednesday.
Hours before the Jewish Sabbath, the street is usually crowded with French Jews and tourists alike.

The European Parliament recently voted down the proposed establishment of a special task force on anti-Semitism this despite the rising number of anti-Semitic incidents in many European countries.
The Parliaments decision means the issue of a special task force dealing with anti-Semitism can only be raised again in 2019, after the next parliamentary elections.
It is important to document what is being said by Jewish leaders and other Jews in the public eye about anti-Semitism in their countries. When the parliamentarians will meet five years hence, they will have this material at their disposal.
One can start with the usually understated comments of British Jews. Journalist Hugo Rifkind recently wrote of his discomfort with being Jew in England today. Never before have I felt that attitudes toward Jews in Europe and even, albeit less so, in Britain could grow far, far worse before a whole swathe of supposedly progressive thought was even prepared to notice.
In a conversation with Israels Channel 2, BBC Television director Danny Cohen said, Ive never felt so uncomfortable being a Jew in the UK as Ive felt in the last 12 months. And its made me think about, you know, is it our long-term home, actually. Because you feel it. Ive felt it in a way Ive never felt before

(58,724 posts)Jewish tradition is strong here. This is one of many synagogues in France. Jews have been in this country for centuries numbering 500 thousand today. France has the largest Jewish population in Europe.
But for the first time in their living memory the Jews of this Synagogue in central Paris are talking about leaving France fearing what they call a new anti-Semitism.
