(6,819 posts)Woody Guthrie served in the Merchant Marine during WWII, on ships transporting troops through waters infested with U-boats. Guthrie's singing helped keep the troops calm as they headed off to war.

(1,832 posts)... was Pete Seeger's very fine answer, written on his banjo:
Guthrie lobbied the United States Army to accept him as a USO performer instead of conscripting him as a soldier in the draft. When Guthrie's attempts failed, his friends Cisco Houston and Jim Longhi pressured Guthrie to join the U.S. Merchant Marine.[53] Guthrie followed their advice and went to sea in June 1943...
In 1945, Guthrie's association with Communism made him ineligible for further service in the Merchant Marine, and he was drafted into the U.S. Army.[58]

(40,416 posts)And no, I will not back down from that position, regardless of any thuggish, murderous behaviors of those who think ink deserves bullets, which is precisely what Charlie Hebda's point is.
If people do not understand this very simple fact, I wonder if this world will survive.
Again, Je suis Charlie!
