then domestic producers, being the wonderfully generous and patriotic people that they are widely known and admired to be, would forego selling on the world market at ginormous profits and would instead sell the energy in america at artificially lower prices.

the US can be "energy independent" if it reduces its oil consumption by nearly half. Since that isn't happening any time soon, the US won't be "energy independent".
