Aldi confirms up to 100% horsemeat in beef products

"Supermarket says it is angry with supplier Comigel after tests reveal 30% and 100% horsemeat in withdrawn ready meals

The environment secretary is due to meet the Food Standards Agency, food suppliers and retailers on Saturday to discuss the horsemeat scandal after Aldi became the latest supermarket to confirm its withdrawn beef products contained up to 100% horsemeat.

Owen Paterson said it was unacceptable that consumers were mis-sold products, but that the problems originated overseas.

"We believe that the two particular cases of the frozen burgers from Tesco and the lasagne from Findus are linked to suppliers in Ireland and France respectively. We and the Food Standards Agency are working closely with the authorities in these countries, as well as with Europol, to get to the root of the problem," he said.

Paterson said he believed the food was safe but urged consumers to return products to the retailers. "The French authorities are saying they are viewing the issue as a case of fraud rather than food safety. Anyone who has these products in their freezer should return them to retailers as a precaution."."

Aldi said it felt "angry and let down" by its French supplier Comigel after tests on Today's Special frozen beef lasagne and Today's Special frozen spaghetti bolognese found they contained between 30% and 100% horsemeat.
http://www.theguardian.com/business/2013/feb/09/aldi-100-percent-horsemeat-beef-products

Comigel, which also produced the contaminated Findus beef lasagnes, has blamed its suppliers. Erick Lehagre said he believed his company was buying French beef from a company called Spanghero but it had since told him it had come from Romania.

I can't wait to see what's in hotdogs after the TPP and TPIP is passed.

you don't want to hear the stories they tell.....just saying....

Part of the attraction of eating a hot dog.....is the mystery of the meat. You eat them to defy health.....not for the good of it.....a healthy hot dog? Why bother? But if you are a meat eater....and you eat one now and again...its not going to matter much in the grand scheme of things....and enjoying one is the tiny bit of danger they represent!

It is a sausage after all.....you don't want to know about the "sausage making"...

HOt dogs are just emulsifide sausages, a technique known as force meat. A similar product is mortadella, but it is always a high end meat. Buy your hotdogs from a real butcher who makes his own and you have nothing to worry about. Buy it from Hormel, you get what you pay for.

I've suffered from allergies my entire life.

When I was tested as a child, I learned I was allergic to dogs, cats, horses, feathers, dust, and pretty much anything that grows on earth lol.

Of course, I have two dogs, three cats, numerous chickens (though I can't sleep on a feather pillow).

But I was never tested for any proteins that I know of. Well, eggs I guess. Yes allergic to those too. But I eat them.

No desire to eat a horse at all. Or a cow for that matter.

When I was growing up we had a dog that was allergic to eggs, so she could only receive vaccines made with horse serum. Unfortunately, that sensitized her to horse and when we gave her canned dog food that was made with horse meat she had an anaphylactic reaction and almost died. People who grew up around horses could have the same problem; it's not a uncommon allergy.

Summary: Aldi (among other food vendors) had an issue back in February 2013 with a supplier who provided them with horsemeat-tainted products, but that issue has since been resolved and did not affect consumers in the U.S.

That 'creative' individuals will, I'm sure, use just this kind of rationale to sell us Pure products which are in fact anything but (GMO anyone?)
We already have watered down definitions of pure juice, pure corn, sugar-free and many others thanks to cost-cutting and the failure of our leaders-to-hell to stand up to big business and their inability to tell the truth about anything.

So what that no US product was affected this time? I guarantee it will be in the future.

They took a chance, no harm no foul.
