Activist brings campaign against drones to Albany
ALBANY A prominent anti-war activist said a group of protesters from across upstate inspired her to write a book about the nation's use of unmanned aircrafts.
Speaking on Monday in Albany, Medea Benjamin, co-founder of Code Pink in Washington, D.C., said members of Ground the Drones and End the Wars were the "moral soul" of America for their bi-weekly protests against the piloting of drones in Afghanistan from Syracuse's Hancock Air Field.
At the headquarters of Occupy Albany on Madison Avenue, Benjamin said the New Yorkers' demonstrations outside the New York Air National Guard base led her to investigate the aircrafts and write "Drone Warfare," which is to be published next month. The book addresses civilian deaths related to drone strikes and the worldwide proliferation and increasing use of the crafts.
Benjamin is promoting a Code Pink event on Aug. 27-29 in Washington, D.C., to discuss drones. She hopes to convene an international convention to regulate the use of the remote-controlled flights.
