(231 posts)I'm glad not all of them gave "because she's a girl" as their explanation for refusing to slap her. That is to say, I hope they would have refused to slap anybody simply because they were told to.

(52,309 posts)personally, i would have:
(a) asked for permission from her before touching her (permission from the cameraman isn't good enough, no matter how nice a caress might be) and
(b) would not have mentioned gender at all in my refusal to commit a violent act. violence is wrong, period. in the long run i don't think the best approach to reducing violence against women is by perpetuating sexist gender roles. in doing so, it suggests and reinforces that violence is ok in other circumstances, and if people learn that, eventually it will come to haunt women.

(6,279 posts)The girl is pretty much a mere prop in this piece, which is disturbing - only the boys are depicted as having any agency.
I do hope the anti-violence message resonates with its intended audience, but it's problematic on other important levels.

(19,841 posts)--yeah it would be interesting to see the same thing in America. I don't think the boys would cooperate at all and the girl would not be so benign and trusting.

And so wonderfully well brought up, that they warm my heart!!
Thank you so much for sharing this. I've been having kind of a rough week, and this gave me a much-needed smile.,
