Heart Attack Grill owner Jon Basso told Vegas' KVVU that the woman collapsed while eating a "double bypass" burger Saturday night; she was rushed to a hospital and is expected to recover. In mid-February, a man had an apparent heart attack while chowing down on a 6,000-calorie "triple bypass" version.
The chain's slogan is "a burger to die for." It gives free meals to people over 350 pounds, and a sign reads "Caution: This establishment is bad for your health," notes the Associated Press.
The 8,000-calorie Quadruple Bypass Burger, with four half-pound beef patties, eight slices of American cheese, a whole tomato and half an onion served in a lard-coated bun, has been called one of the "world's worst junk foods."

(100,104 posts)I just about puked everywhere - and I'm not the type of person who pukes easily.
In this day and age when people are waking up to the kind of shit and poison that's in their food and becoming far more health conscious than previous generations - you really have to wonder if there's some people who just don't give a shit.
My brother is a fourth year medical student and he has some nightmare stories about treating some absolutely massive people who just don't give a shit about health and are too lazy to do anything about it - and they're usually the ones complaining about "Obamacare".

If it wasn't so sad how these people are manipulated and essentially tortured for another's profit, it would actually be funny.

That kinda implies that person doesn't think this should be a freedom.

(5,019 posts)and should be hassled by stalwart e-defenders of freedom. If brave men didn't weather the horrible winter in Valley Forge for our God-given right as Americans to eat 8000 calorie burgers, then what were they on about, right?
Frankly, I don't see why the government should worry about 8000 calorie burgers when there are much more pressing needs. I think the government, in principle, has the power to ban or tax such things, but really, it'd be a media circus. Imagine O'reilly and that lot bloviating about the "nanny state" for a month (unless the War on Christmas intervenes). Besides, you aren't going to easily change the mind of anyone who thinks eating like that is a good idea. Educating the young is better. Most kids know not to go out and eat whatever mushrooms they see growing in the woods, they can be taught to put that garbage into a mental bin one or two notches down on the danger list.
But then, I'm one of those hippies that thinks they should decriminalize mj AND believe Libertarians are suckers, lol. I'd be willing to revisit it when someone gets put in jail for five years for having a Coranary Burger in their car.

(6,801 posts)I don't think the government should tell people what not to eat.
And I don't think education will eliminate unhealthy food.
Some people know it's unhealthy *and don't care*.
Who actually thinks smoking is good for them, or weighing 400lbs is healthy? I'm guessing everyone at this point is aware neither of those things will extend their lives.
And yet you can always find smokers and obese people.
Meh, I wasn't arguing in favor of this diet. Nor did I make any connection to fascism. I just didn't like the idea that having this freedom (including making bad choices) is a problem that needs to be addressed by law.
Obviously this is a bigger deal for you than it is for me.

i agreed with you on that, didn't I? I just don't see how what alcibiades_mystery said rustled your jimmies so thoroughly. Libertarians are suckers. To be honest, I didn't see any implied call for regulation, though.

On the one hand he puts hypothetical libertarians arguing for freedom. And they are the bad guys. On the other side he has "the goddamn nanny-staters" who are trying to prevent people from eating this way. And those are the good guys.
That's pretty clearly an argument against freedom (in this regard) and for the "nanny-state" (which implies government regulations on food choices).
He didn't argue for education. He put a straw-libertarian up against a straw-nanny-stater and supporter the straw-nanny-stater.

(75,480 posts)They are free to smoke whatever they want to as well, as long as the rest of us don't have to watch them do it and breathe the air around them. We as a society have a duty to keep them informed about what they are doing to their bodies. We are doing it with tobacco. Why not food? Also, should we really be making money from all this? I say make food and tobacco non-profit and you will see places like that restaurant disappear over night. The tobacco industry no longer targets us as a market and is focusing on third world countries instead. Take the profit out of it and it will disappear.

(33,688 posts)Lotus of Siam has been called the best Thai restaurant in North America by a number of top food critics. I call it mind-boggling. Honest to dog, I've eaten in Lyon, in Paris, in New Zealand and at great restaurants in LA, Vegas, Philly, Boston, Minneapolis, and NYC. Lotus of Siam was right up there with Ming Tsai's Blue Ginger and the late, lamented Le Bec Fin in Philly as one of the best meals I have ever eaten.
