'Seeds, Soil, and the Tyranny of Corporate Power': A Message of Hope for 2015

'Seeds, Soil, and the Tyranny of Corporate Power': A Message of Hope for 2015
1/1/2015

It has been declared 'the International Year of the Soil,' but the year ahead, according to Dr. Vandana Shiva, will also see key developments in the global fight to overthrow corporate power with true democracy

Dr. Shiva says that within 'the soil lies the answer to the problems oil has created' and that 'organic gardens of hope everywhere' and 'farms that grow real food' can be a powerful enough force to help upend the march of globalized neoliberalism that is taking the planet towards the brink of destruction. (Image: Magnus Franklin/flickr/cc)

Last year, the United Nation's Food and Agricultural Organization officially declared that 2015 would be celebrated as the International Year of the Soil citing the threat to one of the key ingredients to the planet's food and farming systems posed by "expanding cities, deforestation, unsustainable land use, pollution, overgrazing and climate change."

Though many recognize the FAO declaration as a largely symbolic gesture, many advocates of organic food and sustainable agricultural are planning to seize the designation as a way to push forth their message that the health of the planet's soil should not be relegated as a metaphorical issue, but rather one that should be at the very heart of serious conversations and policy changes humanity must begin in order to transform its economic systems, its democracies, the way it generates power, and the way it feeds itself.

Summarizing the issues at stake and the fight ahead, one of the world's most prominent advocates for democracy and organic agriculture, Dr. Vandana Shiva, an Indian activist and founder of the seed-saving organization Navdayna, has posted an impassioned New Years message to those battling on behalf of food sovereignty, economic egalitarianism, agroecology, climate action, and social justice.

In the video posted to the website of Seed Freedom, Shiva applauded all those who have stood up for the the rights of people and Mother Earth against the greed and disregard perpetrated by corporate power and the neoliberal economic model which is ravaging economies, human rights, and the planet's ability to sustain life....

...The challenge of fighting for true democracy, according to Shiva, "is going to be the single biggest challenge throughout 2015."...

tried growing container crops this year. Unfortunately, I have a cat who mistook my planters for litter boxes & it was pretty much a bust. Will try again next summer, with chicken wire around the edges or something.

Anyways, I'm envious that you grow your own, and surprised too. Thanks for the reminder that we too often put situations and people in categories, forgetting the multi-facetedness of life. Thanks for sharing that.

And that there are 3 levels of "USDA Organic" certification (Wikipedia). Whoa, who knew?

How your food gets the "Non-GMO" label
on 31 December 2014.

Harvest Public Media, 29 Dec 2014

Demand for products that don’t contain genetically modified organisms, or GMOs, is exploding.

Many food companies are seeking certification that their products don’t have any genetically modified ingredients, and not just the brands popular in the health food aisle. Even plain Cheerios, that iconic cereal from General Mills, no longer contains GMOs.

“We currently are at over $8.5 billion in annual sales of verified products,” said Megan Westgate, executive director of the Non-GMO Project, the main supplier of non-GMO labels.

To receive the label, a product has to be certified as containing ingredients with less than 1 percent genetic modification. Westgate says that’s a realistic standard, while totally GMO-free is not. She says natural foods stores began the process of defining a standard, involving other interested players along the way, including consumers. Now, General Mills is just one of the big food companies selling non-GMO products.

Sales of food labeled as “Non-GMO” ballooned to over $3 billion in 2013, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Organic and Local: Still the Gold Standard

...The fact is, none of these labels—local, natural or non-GMO—on its own provide a guarantee that the food behind the label is either healthy, sustainable or natural. There is only one food label that provides that guarantee: USDA Organic. And because organic food sourced locally is not only healthy, sustainable and natural, but also supports small farmers and contributes to strong communities, today’s Gold Standard for the health-conscious and environmentally and socially concerned consumer is USDA organic and local.

"Naturally" genetically engineered

Consumer Reports released this week (October 7, 2014) the results of tests conducted on more than 80 different processed foods containing corn or soy. The tests revealed that those products labeled “organic” or “non-GMO” were in fact GMO-free.

But almost all of the products that were labeled “natural” contained substantial amounts of GMOs.

The non-profit testing group said it found GMOs in breakfast cereals, potato chips and infant formula—all of them sold to consumers under the “natural” label.

Slapping the word “natural” on products that are anything but, is one of the most brilliant—and profitable—food marketing scams of all time. According to the “United States Organic Food Market Forecast & Opportunities, 2018,” sales of so-called “natural” foods, including nutritional supplements, topped $70 billion in 2013.

US human trials of GM banana for Africa widely condemned
on 12 December 2014.

Open letter supported by more than 120 organizations from around the world

The Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa (AFSA) has sent the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation a letter protesting about the human trials on a GM beta-carotene-enriched banana that has never, as far as we know, been through basic toxicity testing in animals. This is in spite of the fact that GM plants can produce unexpected new toxins or allergens.

The GM banana isn't even needed, as non-GM beta-carotene-enriched bananas have existed and been consumed for centuries.

The developers of the GM banana have been accused of pirating the genes from these naturally nutritious bananas to engineer their own variety.

World scientists and academics demand halt to GMO field trials in Thailand

Accountability needed in case of contamination
A group of scientists and academics has written to the Prime Minister of Thailand to ask him not to go ahead with GMO field trials.

EXCERPT: Existing academic literature suggests that while it is unproven that genetically modified seeds are higher yielding, there are causes to be extremely concerned by genetically modified crops' negative ecological, social, health, and economic impact.

A New Year's Message from Ronnie

January 1, 2015
by Ronnie Cummins

“In the seed and the soil, we find the answers to every one of the crises we face. The crises of violence and war. The crises of hunger and disease. The crisis of the destruction of democracy.” – Vandana Shiva

Today, the first day of the International Year of the Soil, I am hopeful.

I'm also thankful.

Let’s start with the thank you.

A sincere thanks from all of us to all of you who helped our organization reach its year-end fundraising goal. Your financial support will be absolutely essential in 2015 as we take on Monsanto and Big Food, while we simultaneously work to grow the organic, regenerative agriculture movement.
