Why don't more people get them as pets? Easy to train and rarely get ill. I feel they get a bad rap since they are so damn cute. Please folks don't hate em just because they have a soft bite which was bred into them to retrieve birds without damaging the flesh!!!!

(7,661 posts)certain tasks. For example, I don't see Brittanys used as fighting dogs and I don't see Pit Bull types used for pointing. It is really common sense. People can have their Pit bulls if they like but please don't try to fool others that they are pussycats. IMO that's where the problem begins......there is a reason bad owners choose Pit bulls, it's because of their traits and macho image that some feel they present. It is what it is.

(29,257 posts)There are no such things as breeds and all dogs are equally dangerous!!!
To suggest otherwise is to promote a doggie Holocaust!!!

(36,827 posts)I'm not familiar with that breed, but what makes a good dog for one may not be what someone else is looking for. I've had border collies for decades and although I love the breed, they are not for everyone. While they are relatively healthy and typically don't ever bite hard, they are high energy dogs that require a lot of attention to keep them out of trouble. In my case the breed suits me well because I am working them just about every day, and I have a big yard for them to run. Those that have strong working dog instincts can also be trouble, especially if you have small children as they will try to herd them.
From what little I know about them, retrievers are generally good dogs for families. I'm not sure if this translates to all retrievers, but most of the ones I've seen were ideal even for inside dogs.

(5,402 posts)Is simply genetic propaganda. I can't believe you would imply anything sensible. You must be a troll, or someone who hates anything good, or maybe you are just too stupid to know you should dismiss any reliance upon genetics.

(4,338 posts)we got Teddy from a hunting buddy of my Dad's. His parents were bird dogs.
Teddy was not, he became a family pet. A bit goofy, but good intentioned and he led a long, happy comfortable life.
When he was dying, my parents had gotten 2 cats about a year before, and as Teddy lay on the couch the cats would curl up with him and comfort him.

(27,670 posts)I'd spend hours hanging out with him, while the adults were doing adult things, and believe I developed a life long love of dogs from my experiences with that kind, good natured soul.
I've had Labs most of my life, they are smart, gentle, and easily trainable. But I like Brits, too.
But, like Brits, they have that annoying breed characteristic soft bite which was bred into them to retrieve birds without damaging the flesh. I wish people didn't hate them because of this disturbing breed trait.

(135,425 posts)Sorry--couldn't resist!
My neighbors in Europe had a dog that looked just like one of those, except it had a solid red coat. It was a brilliant retriever and used to go bird hunting with the neighbor all the time. When he wasn't working, he pretty much lived over at my house, because I indulged him and had a very large gated garden where he could romp and play.

Having said that, these pups are very cute, there are MANY breed specific rescue
operations and shelters with purebred dogs.
The best way to adopt an animal is to got to Petfinder.org. You can see their pictures

(6,843 posts)My dogs point, retrieve in land and water, and blood track exceptionally well. The breed will also run and bay hogs and have the physique and the aggression to do it well. Under the FCI system which I strongly adhere to, dogs must be rigorously tested as well as their health proven prior to being allowed to breed and register the puppies. We have breed wardens and records are kept as thorough and immaculate as one would expect from a German run organization.
Make no mistake, the AKC is part of the problem with dogs in America. Strong breed clubs do a lot for producing happy healthy dogs. Weak breed clubs like the AKC contributes to things like puppy mills and a myriad of health problems. Many people who want working dogs will only buy FCI registered dogs for that reason.

(36,926 posts)We need little dogs, preferably under 10 pounds. Recently we adopted an adorable little Pom Pom, but if I were looking for a larger dog, I would definitely consider a Brittany, or some mix thereof.

(15,396 posts)say she always tries to bite them (and she does) I never knew the part about the soft bite, all I knew was she doesn't ever mean to harm.
Now I know a little more about the pooch.
