Koch brothers freak out in response to Rolling Stone expose

Koch brothers freak out in response to Rolling Stone expose

Tim Dickinson's fantastic expose of the Koch brothers in the latest issue of Rolling Stone has gotten plenty of attention. For very good reason: it's a well-sourced, deep dive into the very toxic—literally toxic—business that earned the Kochs enough money to buy up an entire political party. That and the wrongful death judgement, six felony and numerous misdemeanor convictions, the tens of millions of dollars in fines, and the trading with Iran are all included in the story, well worth your time.

No one has given it more attention, it seems, than the notoriously thin-skinned Kochs. In typical Koch fashion, they don't argue the facts of Dickinson's story. They attack Dickinson, who responds here. Here's the nut of his detailed response.

The requests to speak to Charles Koch and Bouchouev were simply ignored. Ultimately, only Holden responded on the record, only via e-mail and only after Holden baselessly insinuated that I had been given an "opposition research" document dump from the liberal activist David Brock. (This is false.) From my perspective as a reporter, Koch Industries is the most hostile and paranoid organization I've ever engaged with—and I've reported on Fox News. In a breach of ethics, Koch has also chosen to publish email correspondence characterizing the content of a telephone conversation that was, by Koch's own insistence, strictly off the record. "Blue On Black"

This song reminds me of Barnaby Jack

Night, falls, and I'm alone
Skin, yeah, chilled me to the bone
You, turned and you ran,
Oh yeah
Oh slipped, right from my hand

Hey
Blue on black
Tears on a river
Push on a shove
It don't mean much
Joker on jack
Match on a fire
Cold on ice
A dead man's touch
Whisper on a scream
Doesn't change a thing
Don't bring you back
Blue on black
Oh yeah, blue on black

Blind, oh, now i see
Truth, lies, and in between
Wrong, cant be undone
Oh slipped, from the tip of
Your tongue

Hey
Blue on black
Tears on a river
Push on a shove
It don't mean much
Joker on jack
Match on a fire
Cold on ice
A dead mans touch
Whisper on a scream
Doesn't change a thing
Doesn't bring you back, yeah
Blue on black
Oh, blue on black
Oh, yeah

Blue on black
Tears on a river
Push on a shove
It don't mean much
Joker on jack
Match on a fire
Cold on ice
Is a dead man's touch
Whisper on a scream
Doesn't change a thing
Don't bring you back
Blue on black
Oh yeah, blue on black

Hey
Blue on black
Tears on a river
Push on a shove
It don't mean much
Joker on jack
Match on a fire
Cold on ice
Is a dead mans touch
Whisper on a scream
Doesn't change a thing
Doesn't bring you back
Blue on black
Oh, blue on black
Oh wha oh, blue on black
Oh, blue on black

The Koch Brothers are the Tea Party. You would think that a conscientious tea partier would object to their environmental and legal positions.

We just have to make those positions known. For example the Koch Brothers poisoned the water supply in North Pole, Alaska so they pulled out and left it up to the state of Alaska to clean up their mess.

I don't think people who worship at the feet of the Tea Party are aware that they are supporting this kind of selfish and irresponsible behavior.

Who live (or have ties to) where I grew up. I'm from a small town in Idaho and a lot of the people that I grew up around (and with) are firm believers in the tea party.

They seemed such like nice people and I can't believe that they know what the Koch brothers are up to and still support the 'movement'.

It's possible that I am naive and they were just evil people and I didn't see it. They didn't seem to be particularly racist either.

For all their insistence on the Free Market ideals, when it comes to Freedom of Speech - well, not so much. Kudos to Rolling Stone.

Watching an interview with the billowing necked one, I was struck by how uncomfortable he looked in his own skin.

He knows he's a greedy scumsucking pig but he is like a child who puts a shirt over his face and believes no one can see him because he can't see them.

I keep imagining an "Amazing Grace" conversion from one or the other as they get closer to death. No one lives forever, and if hell is real ( don't believe that myself ) then the Koch brothers have a bubbling, fiery, putrid cesspool reserved in their name. And they know it.

Better than any of us, those two termite queens know what evils they have done for power and money. Instead of getting accolades, they are nearly universally reviled. Except by those other 78 people who own half of the world's resources....

Most people don't know this, but the Koch brothers are actually large worms from outer space that wear human body suites which they molt out of annually. There blood is actually black and quite toxic. They do not eat a traditional earth worm diet, but instead prefer to eat the blood, tears, and souls of their victims. They don't actually live in there mansions, but prefer to burrow beneath them. Having no sex organs, they simply puke out new offspring (Scott Walker for example). Eventually they will be 100 feet long, and they and their children will eat the earth. Happy New Year!

I'm a lifelong subscriber and I read the issue online. It's like reading the print copy on pdf. I donate my actual print copy to the kitchen staff at the local wing joint in exchange for letting me share a smoke with them in the back, out of the brutal Ohio breath of cold on the front walk.

I read the rest of the issue a couple nights ago and promised myself I'd return to read Dickinson's story later when I was less fatigued. Even though I just returned from my New Year get together and I feel a bit "fatigued" again, I think I might be up to it now.

funny how the article muses that if Dems hold the Senate, the Kochs will only have themselves to blame.

"The Kochs clearly do not stand up well to close scrutiny, and clearly are not prepared for it. For some reason, probably because they're richer than god, they seem to assume that they should be able to swoop into our political system and attempt to buy it without being subject to close examination. That attitude, along with their long history of abusing people, the environment, and the political system, is doing them no favors. They've made themselves the subject of this election, and if Democrats hold the Senate, it will largely be because the Kochs have made themselves such good enemies."

So none of that mattered. The Koch party won in a landslide.

This jumped out:

In "the science of success," Charles Koch highlights the problems created when property owners "don't benefit from all the value they create and don't bear the full cost from whatever value they destroy." He is particularly concerned about the "tragedy of the commons," in which shared resources are abused because there's no individual accountability. "The biggest problems in society," he writes, "have occurred in those areas thought to be best controlled in common: the atmosphere, bodies of water, air.?.?.?."

But in the real world, Koch Industries has used its political might to beat back the very market-based mechanisms – including a cap-and-trade market for carbon pollution – needed to create the ownership rights for pollution that Charles says would improve the functioning of capitalism.

In fact, it appears the very essence of the Koch business model is to exploit breakdowns in the free market. Koch has profited precisely by dumping billions of pounds of pollutants into our waters and skies – essentially for free. It racks up enormous profits from speculative trades lacking economic value that drive up costs for consumers and create risks for our economy.

In addition to Koch Industry's obvious detriment to our environment, Koch holds an undisclosed chunk of the toxic derivatives market that Brooksley Born cautioned would send the global economy into a tailspin (which it did, in 2008). Currently the derivatives market has an estimated notional value of $1.2 quadrillion--more than twenty times the combined GDPs of every nation on this planet. This wholly unregulated market is a disaster waiting to happen.
