Chuck Todd Defends Not Challenging Republican Lies On Meet The Press
By: Jason Easley
Sunday, December, 28th, 2014, 12:28 pm

Chuck Todd explained that the mainstream media has sold out facts for access. Todd said that he allows guests to lie on Meet The Press, because if he didn’t, politicians (Republicans) would refuse to be on his show.

Video at link~

During a roundtable discussion with several comedians Meet The Press’s Chuck Todd made excuses for why he lets Republicans get away with saying things that aren’t true.

Lewis Black asked Todd how he put up with guests who babble on with their talking points without barking at them, and Todd’s answer revealed why people don’t trust the media. The Meet The Press host said, “We all sit there, because we all know, the first time we bark is the last time that they do the show. You say something, and sometimes it is last time they will ever come on your show. There is that balance.”

One never hears stories about Democrats refusing to on non-Fox News shows because they are worried about the interviewer. It is common practice for Republicans to avoid any outlet that will challenge their falsehoods and talking points. Republicans have Fox News, so unless they are treated like they would be on Fox, they avoid mainstream media interviews.

The corporate media, like Chuck Todd, go easy on Republicans because they need access to guests for their shows. In other words, the mainstream media regularly sells out facts and truth in order to keep the access that they believe that they need. What people like Chuck Todd don’t understand is that by letting guests get away with saying things that aren’t true, they are permanently damaging the credibility of the press and fueling distrust of the media.

No one is suggesting that mainstream media should be attacking guests, but their first responsibility should be to facts not access. Politicians need the media. They need national platforms. Todd’s excuse for why the mainstream allows Republicans to lie doesn’t hold up under scrutiny.

Since the news became a corporate for-profit enterprise, the mission of informing the public has taken a back seat to the idea that not rocking the boat is better for business than telling the truth. Chuck Todd is a symptom of a much larger disease. His explanation perfectly sums up why millions of Americans don’t trust the corporate media.

Otherwise they become like SONY initially was toward the hackers - "oh, uh, okay, we'll bow to your dictates. Whatever you say! We'll be nice! Don't be mean to us!"

Unfortunately we already have a template for that. Cenk Uyger and the Young Turks got the axe because the thin-skinned control freaks in the RNC in Washington complained that his show wasn't being very nice to them and they were gonna retaliate by not being available to guest on the show. BIG FUCKING DEAL. SO THE-HELL WHAT??? Shoulda dick cheney'd them (as that war criminal hissed to Patrick Leahy on the floor of the Senate: "Go Fuck Yourself!&quot

The proper response to this, when these assholes throw a hissy fit, should be: "So What?" Basically - "oh, so you don't want to come on? Can dish it out but can't take it? FINE! We've got LOTS of other people available whom we can put on the air. See ya!"

A few strong doses of that and I'd bet they'd start coming around. And worse case scenario? Maybe we'd get a few more Dems and liberals and progressives on, and a little more GENUINELY fair and balanced coverage, instead. OTHER voices would get exposure, and OTHER faces would get face time, for a change. Sounds like an all-around win to me.

All these replies seem to be missing the fact that the author of the piece, Jason Easley, made up the headline... i.e. Todd did not say anything about reacting to lies. Easley does that kind of thing a lot, he's a terrible columnist, fabricating facts to create clickbait. There is a good point to be made that hosts may go easy on guests in order to maintain access (and it's a point that has been made before). But Todd did not actually defend not challenging lies in this clip.

that was plainly heard near the end of the clip - the back and forth about "barking" (basically calling out anything the host found inconsistent, confusing, or untruthful) and acknowledgement that the comedians would do such as a standard practice vs the horrible horrible threat of losing a guest if a purported "journalist" did the same.

The bullshit from Schmuck's mouth that essentially misuses the concept of "balance" by basically indicating that a lie should be allowed to stand in order to achieve "balance" (because the liar's poor widdle feelings would get hurt and he would take his ball and go home), thereby relinquishing the so-called "4th estate's" original role, only underscores how far they have fallen into propaganda peddling.

They'd be happy to appear week after week to babble their opinions on illegitimate rape, FEMA camps, death panels, Mexicans with calves the size of cantaloupes, vaginal wanding, rectal feeding, you name it. All MTP needs to is say is "Senator X couldn't make it today so representing the Republican position for twelve weeks straight are Congresspersons Gohmert, Bachman, and King" (doesn't matter which one).

There was a time when they crafted language to try to sell unpopular ideas to Liberals.

Newt came out with his "word list" and won control of Congress using negative campaigns and now all those "Think" Tanks spend the whole of their efforts attacking the very people they were trying to court.

Fast forward and you have Republicans now believing all of their own spin and a new generation RAISED on lies. Further, they have become a cult firmly convinced of their version of reality and they actually have deluded themselves into the belief that their FAITH can mold reality by the sheer power of their awesome and superior will.

Keep in mind that American Conservatives once had dreams of going global. Maggie in the UK was only one example. Now they spend their entire effort trying to keep themselves convinced and they're losing influence as their last remaining demographic ages and dies off. Long gone are the days of the ambitious "dynamic young man" who proudly called themselves "dittoheads".

And, during the 90s, they did in fact make a VERY STRONG effort to package their bullshit into SOME kind of veneer of legitimacy - they crowed about the constitution and had some well crafted rationale to backup their positions.

Today, they have reversed positions so many times they don't even really know what they "stand for" and it is just wake up in the morning, figure out what everyone is screaming about and scream about it, even if it completely contradicts what they were screaming about the day before.

And, yes, the Ryans, the Rand Pauls ... These guys now know the utter bullshit the republicans have been spewing for decades as REALITY.

That said, the country I see around me ... People are so distracted and comfortable, they believe in the evil liberal boogyman, regardless of how senseless that narrative is - be it the PC thing, be it the welfare thing, be it immigration ...

SO, they have learned, scream loud and hard, have a boogyman to demonize and the sheeple will go along with what they are selling 50+ percent of the time.

52. What Chuck Todd does not understand is that if you present falsehood as truth, people eventually
Sun Dec 28, 2014, 05:22 PM
Dec 2014

recognize and reject the deception you are allowing to be perpetrated. The intelligent stop trusting you.

Jon Stewart reveals the truth by exaggerating falsehoods in such an obvious manner that viewers see the deception (unless they are really stupid, and many conservatives are really stupid).

Moliere's comic shtick was to, for example, portray such an extreme miser that everyone recognized the elemental characteristics of the miser and could then recognize those traits not just in others but maybe, hopefully in themselves.

That's what Jon Stewart and Black do. They take an obvious lie that is being pushed off on Americans, blow it up, exaggerate it so that we can see its components very clearly. There humor or satire is like a magnifying glass focused on the political lies and liars of our time.

Their humor works only because they enlarge some sort of lie -- a conceit, that is some belief we have about ourselves that is flattering but not honest -- an outright falsehood that we are being persuaded to believe.

Chuck Todd, in allowing lies to be told on his show by people who impress him as being very important, is hiding the truth, allowing falsehoods to be passed off as truth. People are sick of it. That's why we are cynical.

Jon Stewart joins the cynicism that is in us already and serves it up for all to see. He presents the falsehoods in such exaggerated form that their falseness becomes obvious -- clear. Watching him is relief. "Ahh-- we say, here is someone who understands why we feel so disillusioned, so cynical. Here is someone in sync with us. Here is someone we can like and trust." We watch Jon Stewart and Black because we get a feeling of relief from watching someone express the cynicism that the dishonesty of mainstream media elicits in us.

If Chuck Todd, our politicians and our other media started presenting the truth, examining the statements of politicians more critically, sure, the politicians would not appear on their shows, would not be showcased, would not be seen by the public, would lose name recognition, become less popular, lose elections. Would that be a bad thing? Who knows?

Maybe some of the dishonest crowd that now predominate on Chuck Todd's show would become less influential, would lose elections?

Wouldn't that be great? Imagine an America in which politicians had to tell the truth to get elected. Wow! I sigh in relief at the thought of it. Whoopee!

How about that, Chuck Todd? You've got the power. Why don't you try to shake some of the scum that you present on your show out of politics? Don't you think the nation would gain if you do?

The frustration on the part of "serious" (meaning lying or complicit in the lies of others scumbag) "journalists" like Chuck Todd with Jon Stewart is that Jon Stewart is doing what they should be doing, and they know it.

Jon Stewart shines the line of ridicule on the ridiculous lies that the mainstream media including Chuch Todd and corporations are trying to sell us.

Go, Jon Stewart, Go. You are doing your job. When you are no longer needed, your ratings will go way, way down. But don't worry. The truth never wins out completely. Satire is always needed. Especially at times like ours when great change is coming but is still just a speck on the distant horizon.

Moliere helped sow the seeds that eventually brought down the do-nothing but fight wars phony French aristocracy. And he did it with ridicule. He reflected the justified cynicism of his time. He pretended to ridicule the rising middle class, but his real targets were the established fat-cats fo his time. He won at least to some extent, never completely. Eventually. It took time. But eventually, women were not married off to boring old men and were allowed to choose their life's mate.

And Chuck Todd -- be ashamed. Be very ashamed. You are not a journalist. You are a patsy. Straighten your back and do what is right and not what is easy. For a change. You have surely made enough money by now that you can afford to be honest and to demand honesty from those you place in the center stage of American life by interviewing them on your show.

Smeared, fired, blackballed and made laughing stock of by both right and the allegedly left. Add to the list, Al Gore, Van Jones, Clinton, Carter and Obama because it's trendy. Nothing to do the truth of these men's character, after a while, I can scarcely tell the difference in tone being applied daily.

All the consumers jump on the media bandwagon and sing the same tune. Same as the right did with Rather, Donohue, Jackson, Sharpton, etc. It's interesting that Todd felt he should answer to Black in an honest way.

Does show what he and the most of them are really about. Without character and seeking the buck above all.

Then when the Republicans complain, tell them they can't have it both ways.

If you want to be on the show, tell the truth. Otherwise, kick rocks (read: piss off!)

Mon Dec 29, 2014, 02:32 AM

First of all the press was created by the 1st Amendment. Why was the 1st Amendment on freedom of the press written? To prevent government officials from lying to the press by removing any retaliation prospects. Look how well the freedom of the press worked during the Nixon administration. That was the golden era of the press. But with corporate owned media the retaliation prospects were put back on the table. The money interests can force the government to withhold contracts with the parent companies in retaliation. And the further we move into an oligarchy nation the harder it will be to reverse what Chuck Todd and others practice.

I don't appreciate lying pieces of poop lying in my face on my tv Chuckie. I don't watch Fox Lies, and I don't think there is one single thing the Republican Party truly stands for that doesn't make me want to vomit.

Russert always asked follow up questions, because he did his homework, and knew what lies they were going to tell about the interview subject.

If the lying Republicans won't come on your show, because you challenge their lies, then
invite Democrats, or independents. Republican scum can babble their tripe to the Fox geriatric crowd. The dementia crowd. The brain dead / wet brain up is down crowd.

I can't stand liars, and bs talking points.

Republicans telling me trickle down worked, doesn't mean it worked for anyone but the .01%.

Sorry Chuckie. You suck.

I will say, having had RWers on my show like Dick Armey and Pat Buchanan and various others, you don't have to be an asshole to challenge them. There is a lot of room in between asshole and total pushover.

I am still exploring that room myself, but at the very least, you have to ask some probing/leading questions that put the person on the spot.

Biting the hand that feeds you is never a good career path for those more concerned with money than being a decent human being or honoring the sacrifices of those who came before you.
Bearing false witness is the MO of virtually every person in mainstream journalism today. Honestly, they do it so much I don't think they even notice it anymore.

Now let them lie to her....

Good luck with that.

Having Rachel do MTP would spike their ratings.

Republicans are scared shitless of her too.

Rachel is about the only thing even resembling press these days.

They will call her partisan. You know, when you only say things
that are true, and you correct your mistakes, that makes you
a partisan. If you are a lying pos then you can be "neutral" and
let the lies go unchallenged.

Sorry to break it to you. Reality has a liberal bias.
