JAKARTA (Reuters) - Indonesia's air force was searching for an AirAsia plane carrying 162 people that went missing on Sunday after the pilots asked to change course to avoid bad weather during a flight from the Indonesian city of Surabaya to Singapore.

Indonesia AirAsia Flight QZ8501, an Airbus 320-200, lost contact with Jakarta air traffic control at 6:17 a.m. (6.17 p.m. EST/2317 GMT), officials said.

"The aircraft was on the submitted flight plan route and was requesting deviation due to en route weather before communication with the aircraft was lost," the airline said in a statement.

Indonesia AirAsia said there were 155 passengers and seven crew on board. It said 156 were Indonesian, with three from South Korea and one each from Singapore, Malaysia and France.

An aircraft has reportedly crashed off the east coast of Sumatera, in the waters of East Belitung. This report came after authorities confirmed that AirAsia Flight QZ8501 went missing earlier today. An Indonesian news portal Bangka Pos had quoted an official from H.A.S Hanandjoeddin Tanjungpandan Airport in Indonesia, Suparno, said the exact location of the crash site has not been identified. The portal also reported that the Indonesian national search and rescue agency (Basarnas) team from Bangka Belitung were heading to East Belitung waters. "We will immediately head to East Belitung by sea," said Basarnas Commander Joni Superiadi to Bangka Pos. The AirAsia flight QZ8501 was scheduled to arrive at 8.30am in Singapore from Surabaya, Indonesia, when the Jakarta Air Traffic Control lost contact at 7.54am.

For the record I saw this report of wreckage supposedly having been seen in a thread in LBN though I have no idea who/what RSOE is.

In any case, an AirAsia jet with 162 mostly Indonesians aboard appears to have crashed due to bad weather.
