Well, if Bond were black, I don't think Live and Let Die would have

been the same book, but of course, Fleming's character as he wrote him was Caucasian, or White, or Whatever we're calling it these days.

The point is of course that the franchise is welcome to take whatever artistic license it wants and as a fifty-year Bond aficionado, I welcome it and will be interested in its execution. For me, Connery WAS Bond because I was ten years old and like newborn ducks, I was quite impressionable. In my opinion however, I think that Craig's interpretation of Bond was true to the literary version, with the exception of hair color of course, and no comma of black hair falling across his forehead. Bond's literary persona was, upon analysis, most peculiar but until Craig, he was not the stone-cold near-sociopath of the books. There was also an excellent set of treatises with the theme being the great question, "Was James Bond gay?", with a multitude of intellectuals debating yea and nay. Those were heady times…

The first four pictures, IMO, were the best in terms of tightness of script, near-realism, gentle humor, and depth of character. The series became cartoonish when Roger Moore (whom I loved as The Saint) assumed the role - no fault of his, and just became more ridiculous as the scripts were more and more loosely based upon the books and short stories. The franchise is near-dead from a creative standpoint and needs a breath of fresh wind, the Doctor's Wind, as it were. Fellow fans will get the reference...

Loved Sean Connery, liked Roger Moore but thought he was perhaps too funny, meh on Pierce Brosnan, thought Lazenby and Dalton were grievous mistakes.
I have, ahem, watched Luther quite a few times, and think Idris Elba would likely be fantastic, he has an intelligent and ruthless edge to him, but do not want to give up Daniel Craig quite yet!

I tried to like Moore b/c of The Saint (I even own a 1970 Volvo 1800E) and wanted the series to be as seriously fantastic as it was with Connery…but alas!

Ever read how Lazenby got the part? Unbelievable...

Craig's character is the most complex, interesting. Very dark character. Casino Royale is a gem, best Bond movie out of all of them, imo.

I'd be interested in what you and PCIntern's favorite Bond movies are?

it was the first film which I had seen which was a 'plausible' (of course as an adult it was apparent that it had more plot holes than Swiss cheese) undermining of the fundamental system of our existence. Dr. Strangelove followed and others, and I began to understand how society's pillars are not unshakable.

...and yet Dame Judy Dench played M in 7 Bond movies from 1995 to 2012.

I don't know the actor they're considering, but the right guy could pull it off, just like Dench did.

in the British police series of that name. A great show and an excellent actor. I think it is on Netflix.

Or Mallory, to be precise. I like him for this, he certainly can have a dark side.
All the Daniel Craig Bonds are my favorites, maybe Casino Royale is my favorite of those. I do like Mads Mikkelsen, too.

of a Shakespeare script: Much Ado About Nothing wherein Denzel Washington plays Italian Count Don Pedro.

I must admit, when I first saw him I was taken back a bit. My nascent racist was confused, as I'm sure there probably weren't any black royalty in medieval Italy. But my progressive side took over and I enjoyed the treatment. Not a badly done movie adaptation, something that Kenneth Branagh has made a bit of a career of. Of course, it helps that Denzel is a pretty good actor. There are only one or two black characters anywhere in Shakespeare.

As for a black James Bond? Read all of the original books, have watched quite a few of the movies. This disturbs me not at all.

It's sort of like getting upset about JJ Abrams doing Star Wars; he can't fuck it up any more than Lucas himself already has.
