Rush Limbaugh Is Furious Over Prospect of a Black James Bond

One of the many secrets revealed in the Sony email hack was a discussion about the possibility of Idris Elba, who happens to be black, playing James Bond after Daniel Craig decides it time for him to move on. “Idris should be the next bond,” Sony co-chair Amy Pascal wrote in an email, referring to the British star of Luther and The Wire

Well, Rush Limbaugh just heard about this plan and he is not happy.

“James Bond is a fictional character, obviously,” Limbaugh told his listeners of the spy character created by Ian Fleming. “He was white and Scottish, period.”

“I know it’s racist to probably even point this out,” the host continued, uttering the beginning of a sentence that should probably never be finished, “but the franchise needs to get with it!” He added, “We had 50 years of white Bonds because Bond was white!”

As I recall, it transpires in "You Only Live Twice" that Bond was half Scottish and half Swiss, and spent much of his childhood in a French-speaking area of Switzerland. Perhaps the next Bond should be Jean Durjardin, who speaks English with a strong French accent (and looks a fair amount like Sean Connery). He actually played OSS 117 in two films. (OSS 117 is a spy who appeared in a long series of novels that started before James Bond. It's been suggested that 007 is derived from 117, though Fleming had a plausible alternative explanation.) I can imagine Limbaugh's reaction to that.

Idris Elba already caused controversy for playing the Norse god Heimdal in the Marvel "Thor" movies. One fan ranted before seeing the first film that it was outrageously dumb casting given one would expect Norse gods to be ultra-white, but after seeing the film did a follow-up post saying he'd been wrong, that Elba had been great in the part. I tend to agree. He wasn't really given all that much to do and he still came across as one of the most memorable characters in the film, after Kat Dennings anyway.

Not a huge Bond fan; not sure if I have ever seen a Bond flick in full.

Has it been established in the films that Bond is white? And are these movies continuations from the previous ones, or are they all stand alone films?

If they are stand alone films, then I have no issue with casting a non-white actor. Same thing for remakes. If it's a remake, then they can remake it however they want to, using different races for the actors.

But I kind of have an issue with changing the character (whatever race the person is) after it's already been established.

Not so much a race issue, but a character issue. Like if they made another Harry Potter and they hire Channing Tatum as Harry. That would bother me. Channing doesn't fit my idea of what Harry should be. Well, I guess Harry could be all grown up and have joined a gym, but, to me, Harry is kind of nerdy, thin build; just like he was portrayed in the movies.

Another example: I wouldn't want to see anyone other than a black man play Jules Winnfield if they did a sequel to Pulp Fiction. Although not really sure if it was established if Winnfield had black roots or not.

Bond was young (30s) in the early 1960s, and still appears young (30s) today.

but it's a cool idea that makes a lot of sense. It's a code name and a cover identity. The agents' real names are so secret they never use them. They may even be made into Unpersons when they take the job - all their records are erased, as if they never existed.

Of course, that's because I think he's too good for the part. It would be like Benedict Cumberbatch in the last Star Trek film. Cumberbatch, and I assume Elba, would do great, but it seems like a waste of time and effort for such a great actor.
