I am not inclined to trust a dog's opinion since the first time I saw one eat crap.

No, we didn't tempt it to drink the stuff. It would go on a bender, wander around at parties and slurp it up from the cups of unsuspecting guests, and then do stupid stuff, like attacking local raccoons, once he sat on a lit log in a bonfire (he was OK, but the sound he made was... unique). One might think this was amusing to us frat boys, but it was actually terrifying, we were afraid for his safety.
