President Obama on Friday said building the Keystone oil pipeline would not even have a nominal benefit to consumers, pushing back at claims it would lower gas prices further.
Obama stressed that the issue at hand for Keystone is not American oil, it is Canadian oil.
That oil currently is being shipped out through rail or trucks and it would save Canadian oil companies, and the Canadian oil industry enormous amounts of money if they could simply pipe it all the way down to the Gulf, Obama said during his final press conference of 2014.
Its very good for Canadian oil companies, and its good for the Canadian oil industry but its not going to be a huge benefit to U.S. consumers, its not even going to be a nominal benefit to U.S. consumers, Obama said.
Obama has repeatedly criticized Republicans for demanding approval of the $8 billion oil sands project. A Senate vote in November fell one vote short of sending legislation to Obama's desk. Incoming Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has vowed to make it the first piece of business for a Republican Senate next year.resident Obama on Friday said building the Keystone oil pipeline would not even have a nominal benefit to consumers, pushing back at claims it would lower gas prices further.

(9,895 posts)Don't mistake the beginning for the end here. I am grateful to hear that President Obama came out and said what he did, but until he vetoes the bill to approve it AND stands firm in the face of the right wing howling, I am not going to celebrate anything yet.
Its gratifying to see President Obama standing firm on principles lately...it will be more gratifying to stand with him as long as he does not cave to the guaranteed political machinations of the GOP goon squad. I will defend our president to the gates of hell itself as long as he stands on the ground he is now staking out. Bring on Impeachment you sons of whores...I welcome your hatred!!!

(7,675 posts)war not a price war, that may take some time and will depend on political rather than economic events. Saudi Arabia and the US are in cahoots to damage the Ruble and maintain the dollar as the supreme petro currency.
They seem to be willing to gamble the breakup of OPEC and the flight of western independents to the Russia/China ruble/yuan market.
If oil stays at the present low of $55 bbl not only will Keystone be dead but the Northern Gateway Pipeline may be approved and under construction while Saudi Arabia continues with it's market manipulation.
China is hungry for Alberta heavy oil and they will get it by hook or by crooks. The own 10% of Alberta oil now through Nexen and are taking minority positions in other companies as well as investing in infrastructure.
This may end in the result that Keystone is not even necessary nor economical.

(22,000 posts)I always had a hard time seeing any benefit out of Keystone outweighing the risk (mainly environmental risks). When the Republicans push Keystone next year, I hope that Obama slaps them silly.
