Today thousands of Spaniards are protesting against the draconian 'Gag Law' #?LeyMordaza, which would limit the right to protest.
Here are some of the most controversial aspects of the law:
1. Photographing or recording police 600 to 30.000 fine.
2. Peaceful disobedience to authority 600 to 30.000 fine.
3. Occupying banks as means of protest 600 to 30.000 fine.
4. Not formalizing a protest 600 to 30.000 fine.
5. For carrying out assemblies or meetings in public spaces 100 to 600 fine.
6. For impeding or stopping an eviction 600 to 30.000 fine.

If somebody more computer literate than me - which is everybody, lol - could go to this site and post the photo, I'd appreciate it.
It really is a pic to warm the heart.
...some day I'll learn how to post pics here.

I am afraid this picture is not new, though--it s from last year.

(135,425 posts)The Ley Mordaza business is serious, but it's not new. If you google it and have a look at some of the .es newspapers you will see this issue goes back a few years, and has been a focus of protest for awhile.
I really do think it sucks when photos are misrepresented like that--it takes an important matter, and makes it appear as though it's less important because someone decided to post an old pic and pass it off as new.

(3,864 posts)I figure it is an honest mistake.
It's a little embarrassing cuz I sent it to people on fb, and they said, wow that's great, and then I had to say it is not a current photo.
It IS an impressive picture however.
Wish we had these numbers in the US of A.

And let's not forget the Million Man March and the many antiwar marches that took place during the Bush regime.

(2,969 posts)Unjust laws only work in a non-dictatorship if disobeying them is practically difficult or nebulous. If anyone can just step out in a street and disobey a law you've made a point of imposing, all you've done is undermine your own authority.
This is especially true where there is no remotely moral justification for it, and what's being attacked is a fundamental right. It would be like if instead of the NSA spying on everyone, the GOP passed a law requiring everyone to periodically submit to physical searches of their houses without cause or warrants - too easy to resist, so they sneak in.
That's also why we don't have a military draft anymore - too much resistance to war when the cannon fodder are unwilling.
Smart authoritarians sneak into the cracks. This move is very dumb, so Spaniards are lucky to have such idiotic internal enemies.

(12,977 posts)It's from something last winter and the banner has been photoshopped. The current protests have involved thousands of people in several Spanish cities -- but nothing as massive as the fake one.
