http://www.nbcnews.com/politics/elections/senate-still-has-more-work-1-trillion-funding-bill-n267496The House of Representatives gave the Senate more time to approve a $1.1 trillion spending bill on Friday, passing a stopgap measure that will keep the government running until Wednesday, but a conservative revolt in the Senate late Friday night threw that stop gap measure into limbo and is forcing the Senate to come to work Saturday to continue its work.
After Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-KY, and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-NV, agreed to postpone the highly anticipated vote until Monday, conservative Republicans objected to the bipartisan leadership plan to take the weekend off before the vote.
When Sen. Reid went to the floor and tried to establish the spending bill vote for 5 p.m. on Monday, Sen. Mike Lee, R-UT, objected to Reid's motion, saying he wanted a vote on defunding President Obama's executive action on immigration.
If this bill does no pass this session of congress, republicans will have their turn at writing a new on next year. The defunding of the presidents executive order on immigration will be just one of the things they will put in the bill along with defunding of Obamacare, and eatery other thing they can think of to help the 1% and hurt the rest of the country. There is no way a new bill written by republicans will be better than the one they have now. Yes, the one now has a lot to be unhappy about, but just think of all the things they WILL put in a new one that we will be unhappy about.

when spurious bills are grafted on to foundation-level legislation like the federal budget and military finding?
Yes, the underlying idea is expediency but this is more like blackmail.

(11,495 posts)And republican know that. But since so only around 38% of voters bothered to turn out this year to vote, and the majority of the were republicans, we can't do a hell of a lot about it right now. If we kick this down the road and let republican write a new bill next year, there will be NOTHING at all in the new bill democrats are going to like.

(8,462 posts)Instead of a shit sandwich. That's how it's supposed to work. Enough with the hostage taking and torture of the poor.
Andy823
(11,495 posts)That would include keeping the government shut down till they come up with a bill that would make everyone on the left happy? That isn't going to happen. You may not be affected by a shutdown, but millions will be. The longer the government is shutdown, harder it will be for those who don't have a lot of money to survive. I am sure that's not what you really want to see.
Paulie
(8,462 posts)Enough is enough. And yes I'm one of the millions. All I can do is beg my elected officials to not hurt.
It costs zero to at least strip this bank bailout provision out. It's not like I'm asking for funding for nutrition programs to be funded and not cut. I wouldn't dare want that!!!
onecaliberal
(32,887 posts)Yes, because heaven forbid we ask billionaires to give up some crumbs for starving humans.
Andy823
(11,495 posts)If it isn't stripped out before the end of the year, then it will be up to republicans to write the new bill. Do you really think republicans will strip it out? Of course they will take out all the things they don't like about this bill, like Obamacare, immigration, and anything else they don't like. Will that be better that what we have now?
onecaliberal
(32,887 posts)Warren to strip it.
Andy823
(11,495 posts)Do you think it can be taken out now before or before the end of the year? What will happen is they will extend money for the government to run till after the first of the year, and then republicans will be in control of the House and the Senate. Do you really think republicans will write a new bill and strip the bank provision out of the bill? I don't.
Paulie
(8,462 posts)What's the difference!?!?!?!?!
I don't expect the republicans to think about anything but their own individual pockets. I expect more from my party. I expect more from fungus and lice but that goes without saying.
Andy823
(11,495 posts)the Omnibus funds the government till next September, so yes they will do what they can to screw things up during the next two years, but they can't change the funding in this bill until it's time for a new one. That at least helps fund things democrats want in the next year. If they get to write a new Omnibus after the first of the year, then we are really going to be screwed with no funding for a lot of things that are now funded in the one up for a vote. You can take a bad bill like the one on the floor, or you can get a far, far worse bill by letting republicans write the whole thing next year. That's the difference.

(8,462 posts)Giving them even more hostage taking power. No thanks.

Andy823
(11,495 posts)You are willing to shutdown the government, put the whole thing on an extension till January, and the let republicans in the House and the republican controlled Senate write a new bill? Because that's what is going to happen, and we all know just how republicans will fill that bill with so much "GREAT STUFF" that will be so much better than this bill, right?
This bill may suck, but one written by the republican led House and Senate will be far, far worse than this one. Will you be willing to keep the government shutdown for a worse bill than the one we now have? Maybe you own't be affected by a long shutdown, but millions of American will be, and that's not really a good thing, is it.

(16,104 posts)Before midnight tonight, something has to be passed, even temporary, with "Unanimous Consent" or we have a government shutdown.
Any single Senator can bring it all to a screeching halt.
For Cruz and Lee, this is all about the President's executive action on immigration. If these guys stick to their principles, just like we want our Democrats to stick to their principles, we will have a shutdown, and it could get very messy, since any new legislation or changes to the bills sent over from the House require the return of the House, which is in recess (they thought it all was a done deal).
Reid and Durbin both pointed out Cruz had mucked it all up, just like the last time he single-handedly shut down the government. Since that Republican shutdown, the Republicans have substantially increased control of the House, and taken the Senate. I just hope Cruz has learned his lesson!

(50,414 posts)And, Obama will have his turn at vetoing it as he should veto this one.

(15,512 posts)If you don't vote people suffer. Some will die. That's how it works. Listen to Jim Moran who sees what's going down here:
When democrats vote, democrats win, when democrats stay home republicans win.
Andy823
(11,495 posts)So those millions of people who will be affected by a shutdown will just have to find a way to survive because it would be better to push this down the road and let the president veto it time after time till something "better" shows up? Are you serious?
Tierra_y_Libertad
(50,414 posts)veto.
Andy823
(11,495 posts)You really think that would work? After watching all the shit they have done since Obama was elected, you now think that since they will have control over the House and the Senate can be "persuaded" to produce a better bill than the one that we have now?
How long would you keep the government shutdown until you got this "better" bill form an all republican congress?

(10,044 posts)The Senate term is 6 years, but all the Senators never are replaced the same year. I think it's 1/3.
Some fella on the teevee said that the 1/3 that are elected/reelected in 2016 (actually election is in 2015) are mostly in BLUE states, so we could undue whatever havoc they reek from 2014 to 2016.
Obama won in 2008, and so did the Senate, and for a brief time, the House. The House changes every 2 years with everybody elected/reelected at the same time. Some Dems might have stayed in longer if not for the ACA.
So, in 2016 we should have the Senate back. Don't feel like doing the math, but I wonder what happens when you go back every 6 years and see what happened then and who we put into office in that Dem Senate year.
Too confusing for me...Pesident's term is 4 years, and my head is too congested to factor in when 4 years and 6 years hit at the same time and try to remember what kind of Senate we had and who was president.
Let's just skip the whole thing, dammit. Ain't worth the trouble and sure as hell won't change anything.

(3,431 posts)that shutting the government down last time hurt the repugs
in the 2014 election. Will their next bill be worse? Probably,
but they know as well that 2015 leads to 2016. I think that they
will be a bit more careful than you suggests.
A lot depends on their decision to keep the filibuster or to
remove it. As long as that stands, they might get some of their
own sauce.
Andy823
(11,495 posts)They won't be more careful because no matter what they do, no matter how bad the break things, their base will still be there to vote for them because they have been taught to hate every liberal on the planet. Remember that with only a 38% or so turnout this year, the republicans won, so that means that of the few that did turnout the majority of them were republicans.
If they are allowed to write a new Omnibus bill after the end of this year, you can bet they will take on Obmacare funding, the immigration issue, EPA, and all kinds of things they hate and want repealed or defunded. There is no way they will give a shit about Obama vetoing the bill, they will just keep blaming it all on him and the MSM will help them spread that meme.
Meanwhile millions of Americans will be hurt by the government shutdown. I don't think keeping the government shut down is worth "wishing" for a better bill to be written by a republican controlled congress.
