It's a good thing that we avoided a government shutdown

Too many working-class Americans would have been out of work had the government shutdown. They have mouths to feed and children to clothe.

Sometimes you don't get everything you want and you might even have some bitter pills to swallow, especially when you don't show up to vote allowing right wing Republicans to dictate the Congressional agenda.

GOTV next time.

Lesson learned hopefully.

I was listening to Cspan for awhile earlier and heard of a lot of really good things the were in the bill, things democrats wanted. Now i agree it was a chicken shit thing republicans did by sticking in the part letting banks go back to doing what they did before, which led to the Bush recession, but as you said it would have been much, much worse if it were kicked down the road when republicans would be in charge of both houses, and they could put all kinds of crap in there the democrats would hate along with what they already hat in this bill.

Sadly many here will not admit that, or don't have a clue as to how republicans actually work. This was bad, I admit, but not nearly as bad as what a new bill would have been after the first of the year.

When only around 38% or so of voters turn out to vote, and the majority of those who did turn out were republicans, what can we expect. Voting matters and if we had gotten voters out to vote, this would not be happening. I am not happy with what was done, at the last minute so the poison pills could not be discussed or voted on to be removed, but I am even more unhappy with the voters who didn't bother to think just how bad things were going to be when democrats lost.

think it was a combination of voter apathy, gerrymandering, and voter ID efforts that paved the way for the wingnuts to win. But I'm surprised that they agreed again not to shut down the government. Something's up.

What about people about to retire and now will have their pension dissolved by a company, because it is perfectly legal or will be soon? Why would you pretend that everyone about to potentially suffer the loss of their nest egg, didn't vote? Not very clever.

Why did they wait to the last second to pass a bill? GOTV really has no impact on reps if they are not going to do their job and let Wall Street own everything under the sun.

That is not productive to the country and they could have passed the bill long before now so talking about a shutdown is admitting to their failure at their jobs.

The pension provision was brokered by George Miller D (CA).

One of the most liberal members of the House. Its purpose is to try and save multi-employer pension plans -- those that unions, like the Teamsters, run -- not employers. Those plans are severely underfunded, due to mismanagement, and some may go to the PBGC -- the government agency which takes on failed pension plans.

If they go to the PBGC the maximum allowed is $12,870 after working 30 years -- this is far less than most of the pension plans pay. In this event most union members would lose at least half their pension.

The budget provision would allow pension cuts to keep them afloat so they won't go to the PBGC. This is the reason Obama is supporting it. The provision has nothing to do with plans employers run and does not affect them.

You did not provide a single fact. I doubt you know what the issue is. For example the Teamsters Central States fund has five pensioners for every worker. That is totally unsustainable. They will go broke and when that happens there will be zero pensions for anyone current or retired. But I'm sure you will offer them advice behind your keyboard.

The repeal of the derivatives separation is beyond "compromise." It basically sets the stage for a repeat of financial crisis, and puts us all on the hook for it again. It is a profound violation of the public trust, and Obama's campaign pledges.

You know I am accused of Obama cheerleaderism here more than most. Hell, I have most of the Obama haters on ignore. But this was fundamentally wrong and dangerous beyond description.

Obama is wrong to allow it, the Dems who vote for it are wrong, and you are wrong.

It is well past stupid to weaken too weak financial regulation at any time but just flat insane still in the shadow of the last collapse.

After just going through a meltdown that would have thrown us into another Great Depression save for the automatic stabilizers that we've managed to not completely eliminate it is unadulterated crazy talk to even think about whistling past this particular graveyard.

What you are advocating is economic treason for the express benefit of unreported and grossly enriched gangsters to the detriment of the people.
