TIME Passes Up Woman for Person of the Year — Again

Early on Dec. 10, TIME magazine announced its person of the year: the Ebola fighters.

The magazine’s eight finalists for the 2014 title were announced on Dec. 8 and nominees included the Ferguson protestors and Russian president Vladimir Putin, but pop-country songstress Taylor Swift was the only woman to make the list as an individual.

The TIME tradition of naming a person who has been the most influential in the news for good or for ill of the year began in 1927 and the magazine has included politicians, cultural icons, the symbols of movements, and business people annually.

Despite the range of selectees’ professions and accomplishments, there is something that the list is glaringly missing amongst the list’s alumni: women.

TIME has selected just three women to be persons of the year as individuals — and the last one was Corazon Aquino in 1986. Before her, Queen Elizabeth II was given the annual title in 1952 and Wallis Simpson in 1936.

1. Some of the Ebola fighters are women.

If the selection had been an individual (male) I'd be more irritated, and it's definitely irritating that the only individual woman under consideration was Taylor Swift (really?!!?) but there were and still are a lot of women fighting the Ebola epidemic. So I guess that's something.

To think that doctors are doing it all alone is insane. At least the face reflects where they are fighting it, it's a black face with dark brown eyes.

I agree with this cover. The heroes and heroines are anonymous unless they contract the disease and get shipped to a first world country to be cured. I am proud that the US is one of them.

- Maryam Mirzakhani winner of the Fields medal.
- Thuli Madonsela, the South African Public Protector, who exposed the super corrupt Zuma.

Look like some of the titles are going to groups of people now. Still that number IS rather pathetic if you think of all the famous/infamous women from '27 to '14.

Where is Margret Thatcher...seems she would fit right it with Time magazine. How about Rosa Parks? Nothing? Okay what about Imelda Marcos? No sale huh. Even Princess Diana got snubbed by Time. How come Oprah hasn't graced their cover yet?
