(36,281 posts)...but way less damage than I feared. Our power never even fluctuated at home, and far less intense storms have put it out for days in the past. I hear some folks north of Arcata were without power for a while, maybe some still are. No flooding here to speak of though. Rainfall totals look much higher inland than here on the the North Coast.
The dogs were not happy with the loud wind overnight.

(3,732 posts)Rightwing trolls are yukking it up about a "little rain" stopping the protests. Cars are actually floating in some places.
It's good to have a day off to follow up on the CHP's excuses for the undercover cops they planted amongst the masked "anarchists", and who later pulled a gun on...Reuters and San Francisco newspaper cameramen. The story CHP Chief Avery Browne is telling about it has some interesting inconsistencies, like:
1) The sudden assertion the cop pulled his badge and identified himself before pulling his gun (nowhere in the eyewitness statements).
2) The story that they responded to a looting of a cellphone store by getting out of their car and walking with a crowd for 18 blocks. (Some people have claimed the cops were seen banging on bank windows and thus instigating vandalism/looting shortly before the looting of the cellphone store...but, I'm sure at this point the evidence is all being turned in to the lawyers...).
3) Mixed accounts of the violence involved. The only one arrested was the sole black man in the group. He allegedly hit the gun-pulling cop's partner in the course of the "unmasking" (remember these looters have been giving the protesters a bad rep all week and there have been repeated calls for the protesters themselves to "stop" them). The black man (student?) in question allegedly has a concussion now, while the cop has "minor injuries". Hmm. Sounds like the cops were being "surrounded" by people outing them, and panicked over that.
This was the ultimate dumb move on the part of law enforcement because for protesters it underscores the idea that there are "agent provocateurs" (perhaps from other police departments and private employ) who are trying to make them look bad.
I've also seen it stated that CHP Chief Avery Browne has been directly advocating for the media to portray the protests as "criminal activity". I haven't found such a statement myself yet, though I have found the CHP guilty of using "weasel words" to portray criminal activity where none exists - like claiming three nights ago, for the benefit of CNN headlines, that Berkeley protesters threw "explosives" at CNN officers, whereas someone may or many not have thrown a firework. The Berkeleyside liveblogger that was there didn't note one single "explosive" though she carefully noted all sorts of other vandalism like setting a police car on fire.
So that is how I'm spending my rainy day. The whole thing is totally fascinating to me.
Ps. Also considering some of the racist implications of the "gentrification" of Berkeley as per a DU post I wrote a couple of hours ago.

(49,212 posts)We had more street flooding in the storm last week, from what I can see, but they're being really aggressive this time about keeping the gutters clear so that might not be a good comparison.

(41,831 posts)I have a cup of hot Cocoa. with Whipped cream and a little Caramel.. its very wet outside, been raining steadily all day. There have been high waves reported on the beach, from what I have heard on the radio. Its still cold here for me, as I do not get full access to that furnace. I suppose I may have to use my space heater. I welcome the rain, we have been in a drought for three years.. we need it, and that flooding water has to go some where.. hopefully into the ground and make the grass green and trees look better. The better the trees, the better they clean up the air!
As someone said today, this is kind of freakish, as we don't normally get our rain until January and February, but I welcome it, especially when I don't have to go out in it.
Well one thing is for sure...
Things could be worse

(10,137 posts)It's ok near me, in downtown Palo Alto (mainly because the creek is a lot wider than it used to be after the 1998 flood collapsed one of the banks), but it's about 75% capacity further downstream, and a friend in East Palo Alto where it runs into the bay says they were getting the sandbags ready this morning. Otherwise, it's been steady since about 6AM, with no signs of letting up. The cat is convinced it's all my fault that his warm sunny place in the yard is gone.
