TOPEKA -- The Kansas Republican Party is asking GOP candidates for the state Legislature to pledge their allegiance to the party leadership after the November election.
Clay Barker, executive director of the state Republican Party, said Friday that letters seeking the pledge were sent this week to 31 official GOP candidates for the Kansas Senate. He said a similar loyalty oath request would be sent next week to those running for House seats.
"It was to help all the elected Republican senators to hold together around the Republican leadership," he said.
The Senate is last major stronghold of moderate Republicans in Kansas, and the next election could determine if conservatives gain enough seats to take over the chamber's leadership, The Topeka Capital Journal reported.
Senate Majority Leader Jay Emler, R-Lindsborg, said he wouldn't sign the party's pledge or any other.
