Two conflicting values - the South
1. The white south should be held responsible for generations of regressive and oppressive politics which persist to this very day. They have repeatedly shown themselves to support nasty, un-American policies, while lecturing the rest of the country for being insufficiently American. And the people in those states continually vote for these bastards. By allying ourselves to White Southern politicians we shackle ourselves to the same kind of regressive, oppressive attitudes.
2. This is America and we are all in it together - each part of the nation has skeletons they need to answer for, but at the end of the day we all want America to both do well and be good. We Democrats want to see a successful and prosperous America, and I have not doubt but that Southern Democrats want this as well. And the South is full of working class people who are genuinely suffering under Republican economic policies - we have a responsibility to continue to fight for a better tomorrow everywhere - and that includes the South.
Some days I feel more in camp 1 and some days I feel more in camp 2.
