The congressional Republicans and U.S. Postal Service (USPS) executives whove been trying to gut the Postal Service and denigrating the work of the men and women who keep the mail moving ought to take a listen to the American public. A recent Gallup Poll found that Americans rate the Postal Service highest among 13 government agencies.
The most surprising finding is that young people had the highest praise, with 81% of 18- to 29-year olds giving the USPS excellent or good marks. Postal Workers (APWU) President Mark Dimondstein said:
Pundits have convinced many people that the future of the Postal Service is bleak because young people consider it irrelevant, but this poll shows the opposite is true.

Overall the Postal Service scored a 72% excellent or good rating. Dimondstein said:
The USPS won high marks, despite efforts by the postmaster general and Board of Governors to dismantle it, degrade service standards, close mail processing plants and, despite ongoing threats, to end Saturday mail delivery.

(3,208 posts)They perform an amazing service, and do way more than they need to (checking on shut ins for example).
One time at our PO, some young guy was complaining and started up with the "My taxes pay for this", and the worker, very calmly schooled him on that. When it was my turn, I told her she did a great job!
They are always friendly, and in my neighborhood, which is very hilly, they have always delivered, no matter the snow or ice.

whining because he had to make a trip to the PO. aw.
but, THIS IS VINDICATING!!!
not for the attitude; i really should have curbed that.
but the truth of the matter! the TRUTH!
and i did not even get into the principled reasons we NEED this service, nor how it stands for everything that is american, not to mention it's in the constitution.
etcetcetc, ad infinitum.

(2,132 posts)They rarely lose anything, they don't charge outrageous prices for shipping, and they deliver the mail in a timely manner. Plus, my local mail carrier goes out of her way to be friendly.

(24,703 posts)These three individuals epitomize the values of what the government agency is suppose to do.
They all know and have publicly said what a government is suppose to do for the workers who are also tax payers and the postal system from Sanders and Warren and to our social services, on which people depend on to operate and function with our Constitution and the small d democracy for transparency.
The first order of business for Congress, is for the Democrats and the Democratic leadership to TRY and bring forth a bill to rescind the voice vote that was implemented under the ( Hassert / Delay ) Corrupt Congress in 2006 to attack the Postal Union and force it to pay 5 billion a year in retirement benefits for 12 years or 75 Billion into the future, (corporations do not have to do this), which is bankrupting the system and in which they wanted to privatize for greed to have Staples as place to drop off mail to non-federal workers to throw our mail into a bag, in a not secure area, but they the Post Master General and the right wing republicans say it will be secure and it lower costs ----right.
The agency is in the Constitution from which to operate under and exist, it is NOT suppose to be privatized for greed.
The Postal system is a self entity outside the government that does not use tax payers taxes to operate under, and prior to the voice vote had net profit.
So we as citizens of this country need to voice our opposition to the Staples or any other for-profit corporate plan and the elimination of Saturday delivery.

(42,757 posts)Which is why the GOP has been tying the USPS hands for decades in an obvious effort to make them look inefficient so that they can bust that union and make the Postal Service a private "for profit" operation. They want it so bad they drool when they think about it. Just think how much more better run they could be if we could do away with all the obstacles that have been put in the way by the GOP.
