In this particular case that is actually not at all that uncommon - there was news story about a 14 year-old-boy who

committed suicide after being bullied following the release on a social network sight of a hidden video that went viral that

reportedly showed him masturbating in a restroom stall.

I think that the freedom to post anonymously removes social filters and often brings out the worst in people. I think the dominant culture in the U.S. supports sociopathic tendencies, and those tendencies are given free reign in an anonymous setting.

So I don't read online comments for most sites. Because I don't appreciate managed propaganda, I don't watch or listen to tv or radio "news" or talk.

I do post on DU. A long, long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, I was delighted to find someplace I could speak freely. I've spent my entire adult life living in right-wing strongholds, and negotiating the political climate with great care. It was refreshing to speak my mind without being attacked.

That was then, this is now. Since '08, I've suddenly become too far left for THIS board. Anonymity means that I don't negotiate with that same kind of care, though; I still speak my mind. For the most part, I try to keep it civil, rarely giving into the urge to say what I really think, which sometimes would result in personal attacks. Anonymity is seductive, though.

Anonymity simply brings out who they really are, their parents and their fellow schoolmates taught them to wear a mask in public, but many people are fundamentally nihilists and sociopaths -- the average citizen, especially the people who aspire to run our country -- because they are taught to wear a mask and PRETEND to care about other people when they really don't, as seen in their online comments about whatever news item is out there. So you're simply learning what "the other side thinks" -- the people who were raised in a culture of violence, consumerism and selfishness.

And yeah, these are the same people who are responsible for the bullying itself, which led to the kid's suicide. Bullying which happens in MOST schools EVERY single time something like this happens. What does that tell you?

I've read comments about this all over the place, and the most common sentiment seems to along the lines of, "He must have been very weak mentally if he let the comments of others get to him like that. He should've blocked the people who were harassing him on social media. The true responsibility is with his parents for not raising a tougher boy."

It shocks me and yet it doesn't shock me. I guess he 'had it coming' the same way that women who get raped supposedly 'had it coming' for dressing or acting too provocatively or the same way Michael Brown supposedly 'had it coming' for not responding to Darren Wilson with 'Yes, master. Whatever you say, master.'

This is a classic case of victim shaming, and the anonymity of the Internet and the fact people can say whatever they like without having to fear a fist coming out of their screen and at their face just makes it easier for them to spew the garbage that was already floating around in their minds.
