(CNN) -- Protesters decrying the Eric Garner case flooded a highway in Oakland, California, late Sunday night and threw explosives at officers, authorities said.
Officers responded by deploying gas and arresting some of the protesters who had shut down State Highway 24, California Highway Patrol said.
Some protesters hurled bottles and rocks and tried to light a patrol vehicle on fire, according to CHP.
In nearby Berkeley, some protesters looted and vandalized businesses late Sunday night, police spokeswoman Jennifer Coats said.

(111,267 posts)I went through the 60s. When they talk about demonstrators looting and burning, I always take it with a pound of salt. I remember how many trashers we marched over to the cops, arms linked and I remember how few of them ever made it onto the police blotter.
Yes, I'm cynical. It's borne of long experience.

(3,732 posts)There's just a lot of vandalism, including setting trashcans on fire, and an "attempt to set a police car on fire".
Bottles were thrown at the police, too - perhaps one of those were shaken and burst "explosively"?
Apart from the explosives charge, the vandal/looter fringe can certainly be charged with a lot tonight.
