Three Name Brands Top FDA List of Chicken Jerky Treats Suspects
by Mike Sagman
Reports of serious illness in dogs associated with the consumption of Chinese-made chicken jerky treats
continue to be filed by pet owners.
Yet the exact cause of these illnesses still remains a mystery. However, according to a recent article posted by msn.com, FDA documents obtained by the publisher suggest a possible link to three popular chicken jerky products and their big name producers:
Waggin Train Jerky Treats or Tenders (Nestle Purina)
Canyon Creek Ranch Jerky Treats or Tenders (Nestle Purina)
Milos Kitchen Home-Style Dog Treats (Del Monte Corp)

* The FDA has not identified the problem ingredient, so they are not putting out official warnings
This was posted in the Pet Group, here: http://www.democraticunderground.com/11613766 but I thought it was important enough for GD so that many more people can be made aware of it. I asked in the Host Forum if this was appropriate for a GD thread and the consensus seems to be yes, so here it is.

(51,666 posts)Freeze-drying is how microbiology labs preserve their bacterial cultures for long-term storage. Any bacteria on that meat before it was freeze-dried will make it through the process just fine. Salmonella in particular.

(1,328 posts)I noticed the beef were made in U.S.A. and the chicken in China, I would not buy those as very afraid of the Chinese food.

(30,947 posts)I have been giving my Chihuahua duck jerky for years with no problems. The same with my Rottweiler, who died of cancer at the age of 13. And I know that the duck jerky did not give her cancer, because she had already lived past her life span.

(1,945 posts)I never buy any treats/food that comes from China. Too scary and we end up finding out something was a problem after we've already been feeding it. No thanks!

(53,958 posts)When I saw the post in the Pets group, we stopped getting them. Ours never got sick, but no sense in taking a risk until we know more.
