NEW YORK (Reuters) - A fourth evening of demonstrations against police violence was expected in New York on Saturday after the funeral of a black man who was unarmed when he was shot dead by a police officer in a darkened stairwell of a Brooklyn apartment building.

The shooting of Akai Gurley, 28, by a New York city police officer at a city housing project last month is the latest in a series of incidents fueling public outrage over what many see as a pattern of callous misuse of lethal force against minority groups.

The district attorney in the New York City borough of Brooklyn said on Friday a grand jury would consider charges against Peter Liang, the officer who shot Gurley. Police have said Liang may have accidentally discharged his gun.

The smell of kettle corn chilled the frosty air, while saws whirred as ice sculptors perfected their creations in front of the Detroit Institute of Arts as the 42nd annual Noel Night moved into full swing tonight.

The event, which offered crowds more than 200 performances across Midtown, included holiday shopping, carriage rides, food and live music.

Amid the festivities, hundreds of protesters marched down Woodward Avenue in peaceful protest of recent shootings of unarmed black men by police. After, they staged what has become known as a die-in in front of the Detroit Institute of Arts.

Protester chants included: "Please don't shoot. Please don't shoot." Some carried signs that said "We the people want liberty and justice 4 all people" and "Black lives matter."..............
