In 2010 veteran St. Louis Police officer lost lawsuit for $850,000 after hanging noose up in office

But it was all just a joke, don't you know.

The tale:

In 2010 veteran St. Louis Police officer lost lawsuit for $850,000 after hanging noose up in office

In 2010, 22-year veteran St. Louis police officer James Murphy and three white officers he supervised lost a lawsuit filed by two African-American officers after white officers hung a noose up in the office to intimidate black officers. Murphy, the supervising officer, refused to take it down, and said it was all in good fun. The lawsuit also stated that Murphy had a long history of discrimination in the department and regularly passed over more decorated and experienced black officers for promotions to advance the careers of inexperienced white officers.

None of the white officers involved were fired or even suspended for incident.

Certainly, when you now view the recent statement made by the black officers association in St. Louis regarding how Jeff Roorda and the white police officers association doesn't speak for them regarding the protest by the Rams or issues of police brutality in general, it all makes so much more sense when you understand the history of strife and racism in their department.

I have no idea why Shaun King would try to make it about the SLMPD, but the second link, to the local paper, clearly says it was the St. Louis Sheriff James Murphy, and his deputies.

The Sheriff basically works for the courts - process serving, bailiffs, and prisoner handling.

They are not police officers.

The City of St. Louis, since 1876, has had no less than 25 Sheriffs, with John Finn presiding over the office the year St. Louis city separated from the County of St. Louis. Records in the downtown St. Louis Mercantile Library reveal that of the 25 Sheriffs of our city, James W. Murphy was elected a record 7 times and another Democrat, Martin L. Tozer, was chosen by voters 5 times.

The qualifications for Sheriff of St. Louis are identical to those credentials for President of the United States. The candidate must be 35 years of age, a natural-born citizen and a resident of the U.S. for at least 14 years. A Sheriff in the U.S. is one of the chief administrative officers of a county. It is the Sheriff's duty to take charge of prisoners, to oversee juries, and to prevent breaches of the peace. The Sheriff also carries out the judgments of the county court. In St. Louis, the Sheriff serves the 22nd Judicial Circuit Court of the City of St. Louis.

The OP repeatedly, and falsely, refers to him as a police officer. It's wrong.
