The Whole World's Watching: U.S. Cop killings now on page 1 of a conservative German newspaper

[IMG][/IMG]

The Rheinische Post of Düsseldorf, usually friendly to Merkel's CDU, ran a small article (full story on Page 5) on the latest in the wave of American cops killing unarmed black men.

The piece here reads:
After yet another case of a white policeman using deadly force on a black man, a wave of protests has gripped the USA. In the State of Arizona, a father of four was shot to death by police after he didn't want to take his hand out of his pants pocket. Overnight, people there, as well thousands all over America took to the streets in protest.

We get a print version at our home - its helping me to learn the language. . My in laws are sharing this all over social media. It's hard for people disturbed by the rising racism based political parties in their country to look to us - when shit like this happens here.

You know they followed the murder of Trayvon Martin there. Husband was over there when the verdict came down (mother in law died suddenly) - that was alllllll over the news too. We just - we just can't get it right.

Yes, you are right of course. The really brutal aspect about it all occurs to me when I think back on the MILLIONS of people who died fighting fascism in the 20th century. It's sickening.

People all over the world would be talking about, and protesting in solidarity with, US citizens against oppression by our government. Not just oppression, outright murdering us.

And plenty of them are on the outside looking in.

We go around preaching that we are for freedom, liberty and democracy. But we now need to be ready for fingers being pointed right back at us, noting that our record is often glaringly substandard when it comes to protecting our citizens' rights, or supposedly practicing democracy while suppressing the vote when it suits certain interests.

By the way, I had not heard about the unarmed guy in Arizona being shot to death for not pulling his hands out of his pockets. Man.

EDITING: The Arizona shooting apparently happened very recently. There's so many of these shootings of black unarmed men by police that I can't keep up.

I wonder how it will turn out. Are you old enough to remember the late '60's and the early 70's.

I feel we are going to relive that time. I think the "re-vist" is what was meant to be. We never finished that time.

But, personally....no matter how hard those of us who lived through that time thought the "CHANGE" would lead to a "Better Time"....it was not to be.

I'm not sure if we aren't regressing into the 50's McCarthy Era of Repression and Cold War where Russia was the Enemy (add on "ISIL" (the common name that even Kerry is no longer using)....but, only those who read History these days will make that Connection, I think.

Those YOUNGER seem to feel WAR IS GOOD...these days if we murder enough ISIL THUGS we can CLEAN UP and be HEROES...after IRAQ/AFGHANISTAN/PAKISTAN/YEMEN/SUDAN and the other places we are "BRINGING FREEDOM AND DEMOCRACY TO.

Next we will be bringing "Freedom & Democracy" to Uninstall Putin from Russia.

Our US Stock Market almost made 18,000 Today.

Times are Good for the USA. Until ......they Aren't.

I was 16 in 1968. I remember it only too well. At age 15, I was on the grounds of the Pentagon in 1967 with the Fugs, watching other kids stick flowers in the rifle barrels of the National Guard. My dad was a friend of Bobby Kennedy. He thought the world had come to an end when Bobby was shot. In a way, THAT world DID come to an end. The last idealist with a chance at a two-term presidency for a quarter century was gone, not that idealists who get to be president remain idealists for long. Just ask Bill Clinton or Barack Obama.

We won't be doing ANYTHING about Russia internally. A Democratic administration wouldn't even consider the possibility, and Republicans only attack people who they think won't shoot back (Iraq was a gross miscalculation). The most effective attack Republicans could mount against Putin would be to keep the oil price artificially low. To do this, to get at enough domestic oil, they will have to poison tens of millions of Americans by fracking, but "collateral damage" was never a concept that worried them.

As with Vietnam (what was that you said about things repeating themselves?), younger people can be convinced that wars are noble, but after we saw enough of our friends come back in wheelchairs, missing limbs, or in caskets, we figured it out soon enough--faster than Nixon, for sure.

As you probably saw in the endless samples where someone with a camera and a microphone (from Jay Leno on down) went out into the streets of America, the typical American knows NOTHING about today's world. They get their info from MTV or Fox Noise, but they are frightfully uninformed about the world outside.

Yes, the stock market is playing with 18000, and I admit to being one who profited from it. Fifteen years ago or so, a wise friend pleaded with me to put my life savings into Berkshire Hathaway at $33,000 a share, which amounted to enough for six shares. He was wealthy enough to guarantee me he'd make it good if I lost all I had, so I did. Good move. I still have them.

But you're right. What goes up does eventually come down. I just can't see selling it off. After the taxes, what would I do with the rest, buy gold bricks?

The most scary scenario is a return to the 1950s. Ted Cruz is the perfect sort to be a reincarnation of Joe McCarthy. With today's lightning dissemination of information, a McCarthy clone wouldn't have it quite so easy, though. Back then, our only enemy was "kommanism." Call someone a "kommanist," and that was enough to damage them for a decade. Today, the radical right tries that with "libbrul," but it confounds them when over a third of Americans stand up and proudly wear the label.

was working at Yale when Hillary and Bill were attending Law School. And, Joe Lieberman was a young Social Activist!

Worked at EPH..(Ebola Research was a Few Floors above me.) We used to laugh about when the "Tropical Viruses" that EPH was working on would get into the heating and air conditioning systems and INFECT us ALL. It never happened!

When we arrived to find an apartment for Partner's Medical School Career...there were riots blocking the streets. We were just there on Med School Scholarship......but it was FULL IN on the REVOLUTION OF the late 60's...early 70's.

We lived through it....

Still out there, here. 's
