Protesters Shut Down I-195

December 5, 2014 6:47 PM

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Protesters managed to shut down I-195 in Miami-Dade County in both directions.

Hundreds of protesters were in the middle of the highway near State Road 112 Friday night to protest deaths by during incidents involving police officers including Michael Brown in Ferguson Missouri, Eric Garner in New York, and Israel “Reefa” Hernandez on Miami Beach.

Occupy Miami took to Twitter to show pictures of the protest which moved toward downtown Miami.

Lots of people are not going to be happy. This is one of the major events of the year and that's a major intersection.
I get it- I'm with them in heart and soul and I realize they want to make a dramatic impact.
But I just keep thinking that there has to be a better way to protest that won't piss off people, many of whom are also with them. Emergency vehicles get stuck, school buses, public buses, etc. My brother in Boston could not get home for 3 hours after working a brutal day in a restaurant kitchen. Doesn't seem fair.

And more people to protest in this way.
What else are people supposed to do, if the mainstream media ignores them, as they did during the massive protests during the two Iraq wars?
Sorry that people are inconvenienced, but think of the people who were shot to death, and their murderers set free. Weren't these victims just a little more than "inconvenienced?"

What happens during sporting events when there are traffic jams? Emergency vehicles still get around, so do school buses and public buses, AND etc.

Though it may not seem fair that your brother was inconvenienced after a hard day's work, the families of the people who were murdered by police were just a teeny bit more inconvenienced.

Stuck in traffic on a Friday night when they just want to get home and have a beer. Half the time when I am in bad traffic, I never find out the reason. There must be a better way. What about being on the side of the road on both sides to show what they are doing. Some might even safely pull over and join. Hard to do that when you are 3 miles away not knowing what is going on.

what is the point of this post? I would bet that since this country isn't a hotbed of wild eyed activism blocking streets at the drop of a hat, when you've been stuck in traffic for stated unknown reasons, it had NOTHING TO DO WITH A DEMONSTRATION.

Doesn't seem fair? Was Eric Gardner's death "fair"? OMG I'm so tired of these hypothetical "what ifs" and lectures on how to win friends and influence people.

Once I missed a doctor appointment when Reagan came to town and the taxi I was in was stuck in traffic. SO FUCKING WHAT? Some things are bigger than missed appointments and late suppers. There is NO WAY to protest in the streets that won't piss off some people. And the people it pisses off weren't going to be on our side anyway.

P.S.: FYI I participated in one of those "swarms" in Manhattan last night and there was a good amount of support for us from the drivers stuck in traffic.
