MSNBC Viewers Rebel With Their Remotes And Send Morning Joe Ratings Plummeting

Morning Joe’s ratings are in freefall for the same reason the rest of the network is struggling. MSNBC is not listening to what their viewers want. Any conversation with MSNBC viewers will in the majority of cases eventually include an expression of distaste for Scarborough.

MSNBC viewers don’t want to spend their mornings with a talking point filled Republican cheerleader. The ratings data suggests that MSNBC viewers are voting with their remotes, and rejecting Morning Joe. Scarborough has never been a good fit for the supposed lean forward network, but it appears that viewers have finally had enough.

A network that has refused to listen to what their viewers are trying to them is now paying the price for thinking that they know best. Viewers are fleeing Morning Joe and demanding a program that fits their values.

They say actions speak louder than words. If that’s the case, viewers are sending a deafening message to MSNBC about Morning Joe.

I gave up watching that show, years ago. I absolutely cannot stomach Joe Scarborough.

I used to listen to Stephanie Miller every morning, and Randi Rhodes every afternoon. WUNNNNNderful companionship while stuck in traffic, which is the general rule here in L.A. And now they're gone. There is quite literally NOTHING to listen to. But we have multiple sports stations (for a city that, I proudly celebrate, has NO NFL franchise - at least for the time being) and all the CON talk we can eat. And for a city this size, we barely have one full all-newser. ONE. Stunning.

I wind up listening to my son's band's demos on the CDs he burned for me, instead.

fed by MSM on the idiot box determining what "they" think is the appropriate propaganda to feed viewers at the allocated feeding time. IMO MSNBC has been drifting into a dismal abyss for sometime now. Maybe it's the Comcast influence. To me, Morning Joe is a train wreck. Much of the show is him giving glaring looks, RW theoretic and pontificating, and Mika preening.

You can listen to the radio while working on your computer. Ditto the TV. We treat our TV more like a radio now than we do a TV - more than half the time when it's on, no one is actually looking at the screen, whether it's baseball, hockey, morning joe, south park, whatever. We're listening while doing something else. It's nice to plunk down on a comfy couch when you're too tired to be typing and just watch some 'comfort food' like The Big Bang, but when you've got the energy to be doing something else, it can provide an audio background. (And, of course, with our package, it actually also has a few dozen music genre stations as well, so I can be listening to reggae or classic rock or whatever just as easily as Scarborough showing the world how much he's addicted to ill-conceived logical fallacies.

If there is any big story going on, each show in order, Ed, Sharpton, Mathews, Hayes, Maddow, and O'Donnell will lead with the same story, and the same facts, and the same outrage, or surprise - like it just happened 5 minutes before their show went on the air. I cannot watch that garbage spewing hate disguised as entertainment, talk show or 'news', that is purposefully designed to alienate, agitate and create hate by scheming, greedy people who want it all for themselves and BE DAMNED everyone else. And that means jobs, health care, human and civil rights, equal justice. The list just goes on and on. i feel like I have gone back in time, except there is no silver car and young girlfriend, there's a tree, a rope, a crowd of excited people, and violent death at the end of that rope for an innocent person of color. This culture and society is getting outrageous in it's desire to have violence between the rich and poor, and black poor and white poor, minority middle class and white middle class(which is disappearing fast). Yes it's obvious to me, that is what's afoot here. People are not stupid out here, some are aware of the schemes for destruction, violence, chaos and mayhem not caused by us the people.

I hate the marathon DVR catch ups that my Lady puts me through but one must.

Online streaming I find rather expensive (NetFlix etc) and there tends to be nothing that captures me and I spend 30mins trying to decide and then give up.

Excuse the OT: Being a Brit I don't know much about Joe although caught a few mins of his shows but I do like MSNBC and my other options are CNN and Fcuks News .. I have no clue which News Channels are local except Fcuk News 8 (Cleveland) and I avoid all Faux New channels as I scream profanity at the TV.

Long live free to air TV (I don't subscribe to Cable nor Sat in UK and stick with FreeView and FreeSat which has ample channels although I must pay ~$200 per annum for the BBC Licence Fee ... another subject for another time!)

Viewing on demand is a different approach.

Most all content is available free online. Try googling "watch online series" and you'll find loads of free streaming content, likely commercial free.

I can't stand to watch it because he is a childish bully and EVERYONE who comes on that show alternates between kissing his as and acting passively deferential, clearly scared that he either will blacklist them or go dead intern on them.

It reeks of one of those early 80s after school specials of a family with an abusive father and all the codependency issues. It is painful and unwatchable.

I actually like the format, and when he is not on set it actually is a good show. But, I haven't watched it in about two years now because it just is too bizarre and painful.

There has to be SOME moderate or democratic person who can be "cool" to plug into this type of format and have a more light hearted show instead of the usual stiff arse morning news shows.

Frankly, he's speaking to such a small audience now, he's probably going to have to start looking into Medicare and Social Security because his advertiser numbers aren't going to keep him in salary much longer. Starbucks (and MSNBC, frankly) better start realizing what kind of permanent stain they are attaching their name to in the form of Cowboy Joe Scarborough.

* and just so we're clear on the subject line... the term comes from the days of muzzle-load firearms. To ensure a good seal for the gunpowder, it was common to place some cloth (called wadding) between the powder and the ball. If the wad came out of the muzzle following the gunshot, then the gun made a full and proper firing.

It blew his nonpartisan image for me. Listened to him a couple more times and realized he is just a stealth right wing promoter. I no longer watch his weekend show. Chris Hayes was so much better in that format.

MSNBC just seems to be trying to self destruct, so the right wing owners can claim no one wants to watch news that is not right wing drivel. Seems we are getting a lot of right wing garbage pushed on MSNBC, sad Todd, Mrs. Greenspan, and the vile Scaborough. I watch Schultz, Hayes, O'Donnell and sometimes Maddow. I think Joy Reid does a good show, but it is on at a time I never watch TV.

that people think that MSNBC is liberal. Really?
Who owns MSNBC, is it liberals?
Does MSNBC follow the narrative of other cable news networks like Fox? Sure they do. If I want to see Rush or Sean or Limbaugh, all I have to do is turn on the Ed Show or Lawrence Odonnell, they show plenty of clips. Sure they put a liberal slant to the narrative, but they are talking about things that the reich wants talked about.
There are 2 people who stray from the narrative from time to time, and I do watch them, Chris Hayes and Rachel Maddow. Chris and Rachel better be careful or that liberal network will do what it did to Cenk, and Martin, and Dylan. Those people strayed from the narrative and MSNBC canned them. Tell me again why MSNBC is considered liberal?

Oh and Phil Donahue, but that was NBC.

First, Fox News dominates the ratings so everyone follows them down their rabbit holes of hoaxes. CNN seems to think they are going to ween some viewers and MSNBC spends at least 20% of every show countering the RW nonsense. I do like Lawrence O'Donnell's show but I catch it very infrequently.

Joe
When Imus got fired (this is before MSNBC supposedly became liberal) they tried out several hosts. The most notable was Stephanie Miller. As a former stand up comedian she knows how to perform/present her point, fairly liberal, and (this is important for TV) very easy on the eyes. But they went with Joe - a middle if the afternoon dead air nowhere man. Was it because of the Starbucks sponsorship? Mmm maybe but to me it clearly was corporate media admitting WE CAN'T LET YOU LEAVE THE HOUSE WITH A DIFFERENT SET IF IDEAS AND FACTS. Just yesterday at lunch a coworker brought up Joe's "rant" and I was the only one at the table who had any idea about the actual facts of the case and how the grand jury was run by McColluch. They all just had the skip-to-Brown's character bullshit. I kept it civil but they were shocked at some of the actual facts that I knew.

Thu Dec 4, 2014, 09:40 AM
Dec 2014

Finally a too big to fail mentality is collapsing, by having a failure to spew his hate and fear and getting up every morning to listen if we wanted too is and was quite tiring, because there are another couple of cable networks that do the same thing and the major one is FIX NOISE. And the viewers for MSNBC wanted a change of actual reporting of the facts with transparency and to LEAN FORWARD with both social , domestic and world views, which is desperately needed, instead of half truths and outright no truth.
This so called show with this former Rep. of Florida DID NOT put forth any ideas of solving problems , a prime example is what everyone heard and what he said on the INSENSITIVITY of his remarks in all of his remarks / comments based on his right wing thoughts of attacking the victim and the use of using his guests to continue to perpetuate this hate and fear in the deaths of individuals in the last three months, the American Worker, Environmental Issues, Woman Issues such as equal pay, rape, NO means NO, Infrastructure crumbling and disintegration, and then his total disdain of public.
So in closing RESIGN, QUIT, FIRE HIM, so that you can go sit on the couch (FIX NOISE) with the other racists, put on your fake face of deceit and deception and bring forth your Sean Hannity, Bill Reilly , Bill Hemmer, Elizabeth Hasselback, Steve Doocy, and others on this right wing demagoguery network who do nothing but spew hate and fear to the masses of the right wing crowd, and tell there believers that they are the chosen ones.

Thu Dec 4, 2014, 01:22 PM

The goal of commercial broadcasting is to deliver you the viewer to the advertisers. Period. The programming is the bait - the commercials are the meat of the matter. Ratings are important because they tell advertisers where to spend their money. Programming may be different but just how different is it really? Not very - and there is a reason for that.

Tied into this delivery system is an unspoken understanding that a complacent brain numb population is good for the corporations who advertise. They don't want broadcasters delivering radically different social views and news. They want the vast majority of the population's biggest dilema to be which flavor of keurig cup to pop into the coffee machine in the morning. So it's as true today as ever - TV is the opiate of the masses.

Look at MSNBC's lineup and chart the programming from crazy conservative to wild eyed liberal - where does it end up? Left leaning? Really? Not over a complete broadcast day. They simply segment the market and deliver programming based on who's watching each time slot. If Joe goes, will he be replaced by a truly liberal voice? Of course not - we don't have truly liberal voices on the TV machine. People have to search those voices out in what we lovingly call "alternative media." Thats a nice way of talking about the media that is not profitable or effective for national big brand corporate advertisers.

What does my heart good is to see tens of thousands of protestors out in the streets following the continued tragedies of killer cops and a crooked Justice system. Something tells me we are just seeing the tip of a very large iceberg. Personally, I think there are plenty of ordinary citizens who are just plain fed up with the way the elite are running this country for the 1%ers and screwing the little guy at every possible turn. I know it's freezing cold most place but my hope is that we see hundreds of thousands of protestors in the streets. Nothing scares the corporate ruling class like lots and lots of angry peasants in the streets. Frankly these "job creators" have no one to blame but themselves. They gutted the middle class and are busy forcing everyone into serfdom so I say it's about time we handed out the torches to the peasants and joined them in the streets.

that's like fingernails on a chalkboard for me. He's this obnoxious, domineering, & over-bearing guy and she acts the sighing, long-suffering, what-can-I-do-with-him, weak wife. She lets him run over her and belittle her both in his tone and volume not to mention his wordiness. Their dynamics make acid spill freely in my stomach.

The world seems to have forgotten Lori Klausutis, the 28-year-old female staffer who was found dead in Scarborough's district office.

Here's an article about the episode. The best description of this incident and the shady investigation was on American Politics Journal, however, that article is no longer available.

Hope he sinks all the way to the bottom. The most I can stand of him is no more than 1 minute, as I only land on MSNBC at that time of the morning when my arthritic fingers punch in a wrong number.
I watch Bill Press until Amy comes on at 8am on DISH 9415.

141. We used to have a progressive radio station in Seattle

but the owners decided that what Seattle REALLY needed was a fourth sports station. Current TV had some good morning shows, but they sold out to Al Jazeera. So between the two major changes we lost Stephanie Miller, Ed Schultz, Bill Press and a bunch of others. If MSNBC wants to increase their morning share, they could put Miller, Press and please please please, someone please bring back Martin Bashir!!!

I don't own a tv but when I was in the hospital after watching Joe Scum for a few days on TV, I would switch over to Cartoon Network and watch Hero: 108 instead.

His idea of debate is to interrupt anyone he's debating and give them zero chance to defend their position. That disgusted me.

Lately I have been up at that time. I make an effort to watch msnbc from rachel to early start, to the annoying cheerleader guy. When I hear the promo for Morning joe, I wait until the last second and purposely change my cable channel from msnbc to cnn.

I keep doing it in the hope that maybe it will register somewhere in some log in some bean counters tool box. I have even turned on the tv just to make sure I get the satisfaction of changing the channel on morning joe.

And probably actually worse on racial issues. That's all we need to know about Morning Coffee.

Fuck their infotainment "news" channel. They're no better than fox or CNN.

149. Honestly why would anyone with internet access watch these types of shows anyway

I don't give a fuck what some dittohead tells me I should care about or why. I have unlimited access to everything right here at my fingertips. I'd much rather go to my own trusted sources for information on issues *I* find important so I can decide on my own how I want to move forward.

I'd rather staple my eyes shut than turn on TV news.
