California storm is a good one...

Last edited Wed Dec 3, 2014, 01:01 AM - Edit history (1)

We really need(ed) this storm.
I live near San Pedro, California, and the rain has been constant since 7:30-8am (it's now 2:30) and showing no signs of stopping.
It hasn't been pouring the whole time, instead has been a steady rainfall with moments of hard rain.

I feel for the folks who live near the hillsides that have fire damage, though.

For the past several years, each time we got rain, it would rain for about 3 hours and move out. This is the first all day rain I can recall in many years...I actually couldn't tell you when we last had rain like this.

A friend of mine on FaceBook (an actual friend, not just digital), called it "Moisturegeddon"—because So Cal drivers are so horrible in the rain. It was a pun on the 10 freeway closure a few years ago that was being called Carmageddon (I was corrected, it was the 405 fwy)

We've got a break in the storm at the moment but it's supposed to continue off and on through the night. This is exactly the type of rain we need -- slow and steady to start replenishing the aqueduct.

California seriously needs to look at putting a moratorium on new buildings. We just don't have the water to continue with never-ending growth.

happy for my brothers and sisters who farm in central California and the San Joaquin Valley. This drought was starting to assume near-Biblical proportions.

I hope this rain tapers off tonight and then we have 2-3 days of no rain (but overcast skies) and then another long, slow soaker. Will greatly help to replenish the water tables.

Also we need enough winter precipitation to make a good winter snow pack in the Sierras. That's what feeds our rivers, streams and reservoirs throughout the summer, which is very important for the wildlife as well as vegetation. We haven't had that for years.

We have also been getting steady rain in Reno all day! I'm with you on your comment on the good it's doing for the Sierra snow pack, too. The Truckee River is the lowest that I've ever seen it, bears are coming down from the mountains looking for food, reservoirs are only at half their capacity...... Let's hope it stays around for a while longer.

but it's one of those odd storms where the temperature actually increased a little as the night wore on, causing snow levels to rise in the Sierra.

I spent quite a bit of time watching the weather radar maps and in places where it had been snowing at 5pm it was back to rain by 10pm. Mostly between about 6,000'-7,200' or so.

If it had been 10 degrees cooler, this would be have been one impressive snow making storm for the area. Though I'm sure it dumped pretty good at around 8,000' and above.

We badly need this precipitation, whatever form it takes

Snow pack is needed for the release of water in the spring...

This storm is 'warm' and is only snowing in the upper elevations....

so finally had to have a biopsy a couple of weeks ago... and it turns out the activity is due to cancer fighting cells left over from the chemo (or something like that)... but PET scans can't discern the difference between that kind of metabolic activity and the kind caused by cancer. Thankfully, biopsies can tell the difference, even though it was scary to hear she needed one. She can finally get her port out and not have all this uncertainty hanging over everything!
