4. I do thank the essential workers who work holidays.

My mom was a nurse so there were many holidays where she couldn't be there or we had to celebrate on a different day. So I do understand the sacrifices made by people who work in those essential jobs. But there was some comfort in knowing that what she was doing was important and had to be done.

But I am disgusted that we now expect that sacrifice just so someone can catch a great sale and a ceo can make an extra buck.

9. I'm going to a local restaurant in a bit, since I have no family to spend the day with.

I'm guessing I'm not the only one in that situation, but would like to say I'm thankful for the restaurant staff who will serve me with a smile and wish me a Happy Thanksgiving. I won't be doing any Black Friday shopping tomorrow, since money's tight and I'm now, well, pretty much alone. Like to think of myself as a decent human being, though, and while I appreciate your post, sometimes circumstances, when they change, dictate our decisions and actions.

BTW, welcome to DU. Glad to have you on board, and Happy Thanksgiving!

...my Uncle HAS to have whipped cream on his pie and it was on sale for 2 bucks, so they didn't get much profit from me. That's my spending (and crime) for today.

I hope the shopping addiction helps the country get moving, but really, it should all be tempered with a little kindness towards retail and low-wage earners who could use the family time. Especially this year.

and this nice, little, old lady who helped me said she had to work on thanksgiving and she has family coming in.

all these employees being held hostage (if they want to keep their jobs they have to do what they're told and show up for work today. it's so sad and so wrong)

there is no way in hell i would go shopping today and contribute to this crap

Avoid shopping today. Only empty stores will get the message across. Corporate greed responds to only one thing: $$$$$$$$$
