Facebook Smack Down --

Crazy Conservative Friend: Where was the national guard Obama!!!????

Me: (Links to awesome thread titled) "No need for the National Guard here:" http://www.democraticunderground.com/10025866328 (filled with white people rioting / acting foolish over sporting events)

Crazy Conservative Friend: Typical Libral logic. 2 or more wrongs, makes a right.

Me: Have you been right about anything about Obama yet? Gas prices down, stock market up, unemployment down, Bin Ladin dead - do you want a pony? Is that why you think Obama should have interfered in a situation where the GOVERNOR has to request the activation of the National Guard? Or do you really want him ignoring the rule of law and acting like a dictator (which so far he has only done in the minds of the crazy conservatives)?

I'm kind of proud of it.

They spiked for a few years into his term until recently going down. I think a president doesn't have much to do with it. Remember those idiot Republicans in 2008 (when gas prices dropped dramatically) saying how it was because of Republicans?

Other than that though, you're on point. Throw in crime down too, and no more DADT.

Gay marriages DID NOT collapse Western civilization as promised.
Obama DID NOT start rounding up conservatives into FEMA camps as promised.
The election of 2008 DID NOT bring on repeats of the 9/11 attacks as promised.
The stimulus DID NOT bankrupt America as promised.

The list of promised calamities of the Obama administration is very long indeed.
But I have lost hope in getting the right wing to see beyond their hate and preconceived notions. (Pay particular attention to the fact that their ONLY defense is constant projection and saying that they were right all along even when demonstrably wrong.)

It would be a grossly insulting usurpation of power for the President to nationalize the National Guard under these circumstances.

Doing so, was a significant factor in the mis-application of the National Guard during the Rodney King riots. When controlled by the Governor, State Guard, and National Guard elements CAN work in a law enforcement capacity. The moment you federalize control, they are restricted from civilian law enforcement operations by the Posse Comitatus Act of 1878.

Arson that was getting under control when the National Guard (CANG elements) were doing law enforcement in the streets, reversed and increased after federalization, because their role changed. They stopped doing law enforcement/curfew patrols, and instead guarded chosen things (certain buildings) and manned fixed installations like checkpoints.

It threw gas on the fire, so to speak.

Your crazy conservative friend wanted Obama to repeat Bush Sr.'s mistake.

If Obama does something, it is automatically bad.
If Obama does nothing, it is automatically bad.

They have enough yammering head commentators in the right wing media, they can always find 3 or four that will fabricate some scathing attack over whichever position Obama takes. 2-3 is all they need to foment reality for the viewers of such bile.

Edit: It's really quite frightening when you think about it.

Many young adults who are still figuring out their political leanings are especially likely to be influenced by the opinions of those around them. If the only opinion they hear is that President Obama and all Democrats are evil snake devils who are ruining the country they'll start to buy into that. I think it's important to offer a calm, sane, unemotional answer to as many right wing smears as possible.

Edit to add: Ask John Kerry how it worked out when he chose to ignore blatant right wing lies.
