RimJob Cries Uncle!

For fifteen years, the Wizard of the cesspool FreeRepublic has been beyond adamant that his little sewer would never -never- adopt an advertising, pay, or membership model. Well, what have we here?

... the beginning of the end? One can but hope.

"Alternatives to donor based, ie, freepathon business model"
April 19, 2012 | Jim Robinson

Posted on Thursday, April 19, 2012 16:22:35 by Jim Robinson

I've checked with an ad agency. We can probably raise the funds we need to operate FR at our current level and at the current market price for online advertising if we run a banner ad at the top of every page and at least one rectangular ad in the above the fold body of the page and a couple rectangular ads in the sidebar. If that doesn't generate enough revenue, we can also run pop ups or pop unders and we can even run audio and video ads if need be. But of course, if we go full bore commercial, we'd have to insure strict copyright compliance with very brief excerpting of all articles to avoid lawsuits. And the agency would require that we install a filter to censor out any bad or unacceptable words in our posts.

Or, of course, there's always the membership model. We could setup a members only system where paying members get full access and non-paying members get throttled back, etc.

I don't like either of the above models and think we'd soon lose a lot of our readers and participants. Of course that may happen anyway if we can't fund it and if we cannot get our equipment problem under control, or if my refusal to vote for or support an abortionist/homosexualist/statist who has plans to install ObamaCare, er, I mean RomneyCare into all 50 states runs everyone off.

The donation model has served us very well since 1997 when we first started using it. It's very clean, uncomplicated and we attract participants who perhaps can't afford membership dues but do want to join the discussion and join our rallies, protests, prayer sessions, etc. And the advertising model would probably bring in the revenue, but it comes with strings attached.

I'm sure there are other ways and ways to combine features of various models, sell books, cds, gear, etc, offer no ads for paid subscribers, etc, even ISP services, but all of these also complicate matters.

I'm an old dog and I like to avoid new tricks, new complications, additional overhead, additional accounting, additional rules and regulations, etc, wherever possible. I like to stick to simplicity and with what works.

Thank you all very much for your continuing participation and support.

Robinson seeks $90,000 per quarter = $1000/day.

Does his LLC pay any taxes on these "donations" which he uses for personal expenses? What is the law? He has never released his tax returns.

He is a Vet. He receives many veterans benefits, disability benefits, VA benefits for health, about $900/month (catastrophic health threats are included, without him having to pay anything). Obviously, he is entitled to them.

But he is a major hypocrite---complaining endlessly about "big government" while taking its benefits. Which we taxpayers pay for.

29. There are a few problems he'd have to solve before going "full bore commercial"
Thu Apr 19, 2012, 11:15 PM
Apr 2012

Problem 1: you can't serve a commercial website from a Commodore 64. With the perma-begathon business model he uses, one would think he could at least afford a Walmart-grade PC.

Problem 2: no commercial entity is going to want to be served by a site that looks like his. Mr. Robinson, I know you're reading this so listen up: YOUR SITE LOOKS BAD. It looks like an antique. Like it was written when your hero Reagan was still in office...BTW you DO know Ronald Reagan signed 11 tax hikes, tripled both the deficit and the national debt, and committed textbook treason by arming Iran, right? If you really expect to become a commercial site, PLEASE transition to PHPbb, which is free and looks like modern software.

Problem 3: stalinist purges. How exactly he plans to stay in business if he zots everyone who supports the de facto Republican nominee I don't know. And, probably, neither does he but that never stopped him before. He is going to have to accept a slightly broader worldview on his site if he wants commercial support.

And none of these things are solvable so long as Jim Robinson owns Free Republic.

(... if you can't access the link directly, go to http://www.freerepublic.com/home.htm and scroll down to the headline "Who runs FR?" where you will find the link to the budget.)

Note the two highlighted categories; that's over 20K$/month - almost seventy percent of the "budget." In my opinion, any reasonable person will quickly presume, much less any nominal audit would probably determine - is "accounted" for in those two items that go directly, or quickly indirectly, into RimJob and his family's pocket.

As is apocryphally credited to P.T. Barnum, there is indeed one "born every minute." By selling hate, hypocrisy, and vile and incarnate evil, RimJob's presumably capturing a cool quarter million from his little cesspool of suckers every year.
