Possible Ebola case in Jefferson County MO

Initial Ebola tests results come back negative for Jefferson County nurse

The nurse was being monitored daily by Jefferson County Health Department workers who traveled to her home, where she lives with her husband. When her fever spiked late Wednesday, the health department advised her to seek care.

Mercy officials knew late Wednesday that they would be receiving the nurse early Thursday.

Clinical staffers were awaiting the patient’s arrival Thursday morning at a separate 15-bed surgery facility on the hospital’s campus.

The condition of a patient being monitored at Mercy Hospital Jefferson in Crystal City for possible infection with the Ebola virus has continued to improve, Jefferson County health officials said late Friday.
Further lab test results for the patient, a female nurse who recently returned from West Africa, are still negative for the virus, officials said. Preliminary tests Thursday had also been negative.
Local, state and federal medical officials have agreed that the patient is well enough to be released from hospital after the 72-hour isolation period ends Saturday evening, county officials said in a statement.
The Jefferson County Health Department will continue to work with the patient to monitor her health through the end of the 21-day monitoring period recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for returning travelers at risk for Ebola, officials said.
The patient, who was considered low risk for the disease according to hospital officials, was admitted Wednesday night and is being treated in a separate Mercy facility by specially trained staff members...

The nurse, whom officials declined to identify, had returned from Liberia on Nov. 13. She was working in the West African country in a “supporting role” in response to the Ebola outbreak but did not have direct contact with infected patients, Robinson said.

A nurse who recently arrived back from Liberia helping to fight the Ebola outbreak in West Africa has been released from Mercy Hospital in Jefferson County.

The nurse had tested negative for the Ebola virus after falling ill earlier this week and checked herself into Mercy Hospital as a precaution.

The Jefferson County Health Department and Mercy Hospital isolated the nurse during her stay at the hospital. Officials say the nurse has had no contact with patients at the hospital.

Officials will continue to monitor her health for the next 21-days as recommended by the CDC for travelers returning from West Africa.

Mercy Hospital released this statement to Heartland News on Saturday night:

The female patient who was being monitored at an offsite facility near Mercy Hospital Jefferson has been confirmed to not have Ebola and has been discharged. An initial test for Ebola on November 20 was negative. Following guidelines of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the patient continued to be isolated and monitored for an additional 72 hours from the time of her initial symptoms. The patient's improved condition confirms she does not have Ebola and she has returned home, where she will be monitored by the Jefferson County Health Department. Privacy rules prevent Mercy from providing additional information about her condition or diagnosis.

“This was the best possible outcome for this patient, and we are happy that she is home and on her way back to good health,” said Eric Ammons, president of Mercy Hospital Jefferson. “I couldn't be more pleased and proud of the response of the Mercy team, who carried out our plans for accepting and caring for a patient with possible Ebola flawlessly. Our thanks also go out to the county and state health departments and CDC, whose support and guidance have been invaluable.”
