Levon Helm almost had to sell his house to pay for his medical bills...

http://www.chicagotribune.com/sns-rt-usa-helmpixurgentl2e8fje45-20120419,0,643898.story

Helm was diagnosed with throat cancer in 1998. At one point,
the Arkansas native lost his voice to cancer and he almost lost
his Woodstock, New York home due to mounting medical bills.

Instead, he turned his home, better known as The Barn, into
a weekly concert hall that attracted sell-out crowds, big names
such as Emmylou Harris and Kris Kristofferson and ended up both
paying the mortgage and rejuvenating Helm's career.

(Sorry for my initially misleading headline... I was misremembering the article from my iPhone. Anyway, the point remains the same!)

And it's not going away any soon as the Republicans go crazier and the Democrats get more conservative, meaning more timid when it comes to cleaning up the mess by doing visionary things.
