Oil company files $1.2 billion claim against San Benito County

HOLLISTER, Calif. —Measure J could mean legal troubles for San Benito County as an oil exploration company demands a $1.2 billion payout for limiting land access.

VIDEO: Watch the story here

The claim is a precursor to a much broader lawsuit expected to be filed by Citadel Exploration. The company is hoping to extract millions of barrels of oil from south San Benito County fields, just west of Bitterwater, Calif., with their plan called Project Indian.

Citadel owners claim they could have extracted 20-40 million barrels of oil over the life of the project, a value they believe equals $1.2 billion.

"$1.2 billion. That's like asking for the moon. The county will file for bankruptcy and reorganize. He’s not going to get anything,” San Benito County Supervisor Jerry Muenzer said.

move to the right to attrack moderate voters. they could stay to the left cause dems vote for them in every every EVERY election. that isnt what happens dems have a checklist with usually one thing on it and if that one issue isnt addressed to THEIR liking they stay home. the cons dont do that. we need to change OUR attitude if WE want to start winning elections

On the other hand, they have to:
- publish the complete and stochiometric composition of the fracking-fluid they will use on this site
- set aside 25% of those $1.2 billion to cover any damages that would arise to this county and its residents and that can be fully or partially traced back to the fracking

cleaner, safer ways we can get our needs met. It time to let the old ways go and move ahead. Let oil companies find a new way to make money, I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard for them to do so.
