(11,012 posts)not have faced seeing what was being done to the character and the show. (Yes, it was a bit campy and not alway intentionally so, but it wasn't the farce Burton's version seems to look like.)
For the difinitive remake and recast of Dark Shadows and Barnabas Collins, I suggest Dan Curtis's 1991 version with Ben Cross as Barnabas. Truly well done.
RIP Jonathan Frid, my first crush (just be for David Selby's Quentin), even if I never was able to forget that you described U.S. women as "cows."

(7,099 posts)I previously hadn't thought one could disrespect something campy*, but Burton somehow managed. What a hideous mess it looks like!
(*I recently watched the episodes on Netflix, and the one where Dr. Hoffman is being "driven crazy" by Barnabas is delightfully awful.)

(41,984 posts)My whole teenaged afterschool life has passed in two days. Of course, with someone like him, it's doubly easy to believe he'll come back, but alas, I suspect he won't.
He was SUCH a poor actor and such a great character and I feel like I ought to do something to mamorialize an important part of my young life.
Rest, Barnabas. Or not.

RIP -- ironic, given who the character was? -- Barnabas!

(30,249 posts)Just yesterday I got a mailing about the Dark Shadows convention this summer in the NY area and about an event on May 10th (I think) in Los Angeles for the premiere of the new Dark Shadows movie starring Johnny Depp. They are planning to show the old movie then have some of the actors of the old show sign autographs and hold a charity auction. After the auction they are going to screen the new movie.
I'm shocked that he's gone.
Rest in peace, Jonathan.

(36,307 posts)It's somewhat of a fluke that Mr. Frid achieved a kind of immortality as he only accepted what he was told was to be a short term role in order to get some extra money for his planned move to the West Coast to become an acting teacher.

(27,247 posts)I preferred to watch "Mr. Zing and Tuffy", a local kids show produced in Tulsa, Oklahoma. I did catch a few bits and pieces of Dark Shadows when I was at my friend's house, but I never really understood what was going on.
