Putin Says He Will Not Let Ukraine Rebels Be Beaten

JAMIE LEWIS KIEV
Tuesday 18 November 2014

MOSCOW will not allow the defeat of pro-Russian rebels in eastern Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned.

Mr Putin said he still believed in the success of peace efforts in eastern Ukraine, where pro-Russian rebels have been battling Kiev's troops in a conflict that has claimed more than 4,000 lives.

The Russian leader blamed the fighting on the failure by both the rebels and Ukrainian troops to pull back from the front line, a key requirement under a September ceasefire.

He accused the West of turning a blind eye to Ukraine's use of heavy weapons against residential areas in rebel-held territory.

Mr Putin said: "You want the Ukrainian central authorities to annihilate everyone there, all of their political foes and opponents? Is that what you want? We certainly don't. And we won't let it happen."

1. That constitutes a permanent impending invasion of the Ukraine by Russian forces.

At any point, if the "rebels" start failing, in goes Russian troops to prop them up. What a disingenuous and dangerous jackass.

If you want to discuss any of the topics you mentioned, you should start a new thread.

The U.S. has a terrible record of involving itself in places that we should have left alone.

but we're openly training up rebels to fight the government there.

I think actions in both Ukraine and Syria should be on the table and addressed by the UN.

6. How sovereign a country's territory is does not depend on how close other countries are to it.

We don't have the right to not allow rebels in Mexico or Canada to lose even though those countries are our neighbors.

I think actions in both Ukraine and Syria should be on the table and addressed by the UN.

I would love to see that but I suspect vetoes will prevent it from ever happening. I think all sides in both countries are afraid that involving the UN will expose their side to investigation and exposure of rather unsavory deeds.
