Has this ever happened before?
Now, for some states, long narrow ones like Cal and Fla, there will be freezing in the northern part but not in the Southern part.
Here in Ala. freeze WILL extend to Mobile, on the Gulf Coast.

(60,010 posts)Altho, it WAS actually a typhoon which had hit Japan and sorta rebounded up to Alaska areas, which pushed the cold air mass down to us.

(36,063 posts)Because of global warming deniers affinity to strict interpretation of word use, the rhetorical contrast between global warming and climate change is sometimes seized upon by deniers as disagreement between atmospheric scientists.
Complex systems are hard to hold in minds trained to break down problems into fundamental, simple, associations. This is one of the problems with common applications of the "reductionist" paradigm; the too narrow view focuses on direct effects which makes many problems seem easier to solve, but it tends to overlook important factors whose influence is indirect and more than a step removed.
Not surprisingly its common for combined effects of interacting components in complex systems to lead to what seem to be counter-intuitive outcomes...such as atmospheric warming leading to greater frequency of very cold spells for central and eastern North America.

(60,010 posts)It's November, cold temps like this usually do not hit as far south as now,
nor blanket the US as totally as now.
Normally Puget Sound is around 35-40 lows ( my home state) until Jan or so.
Normally South Ala. is above freezing until late winter.
It is early and it is very cold all over the country, except ( so far) so. Cal. and So. Fla.
And this is year 2 of this arctic dip in the jet stream.
ClimateHawk
(211 posts)It was colder 14 years ago when the country had a very cold November-December. In fact, Nov-Dec 2000 was the coldest Nov-Dec on record.
[link:http://www.noaanews.noaa.gov/stories/s557.htm|
Also the coldest November on record for the Contiguous U.S. was 1911.

(211 posts)Also, here is the link to the report from NOAA on the record cold November-December back in 2000.

(211 posts)Lastly, the fact that the Contiguous U.S. had the 4th warmest October probably makes this November seem even colder than it has been.

I had to bring my tea plants in (Camellia sinensis). Yes, that Tea. The glorious, most awesome thing on the planet, the humble tea.

(53,339 posts)But tea sounds very good on nights like this.

(39,961 posts)My plants are small, though. They are beautiful, though, and smell like, well, good tea. They take time to spread out I've been told, so this winter, they are in the house so they can flourish .

(46,436 posts)but it is unseasonably warm by many degrees. It's 34 in Anchorage right now when it should be about 20 degrees this time of year. No snow here either. It's supposed to rain tomorrow. We would be happy to take back the cold and snow please.

Blue_In_AK
(46,436 posts)It's called "Living Earth." You can set it to show clouds, heat, wind, humidity. You can also set different cities for checking their weather conditions. Like for me, I follow Anchorage, Then Denver and Los Angeles, since my kids live there. It's one of my favorite apps. I just figured out how to capture the image for sharing like this.

(5,810 posts)It's not unheard of us for us to have a cold snap in the fall but many times it is well into December or early January before we need our winter clothes or have to worry about outside plants. We should have moved some in to the garage last night but forgot to do that since we were just arriving back home after a 2 week trip and didn't realize how cold it was going to get last night.
Ironically enough (or typical, truth to tell), we'll be back up to 70 or so by next Monday, which is ONE of the reasons so many people like to come here for the winter. Snowbirds know. Cold a day or two or three and then back to more moderate temps.
Not a climate change denier here! I know to take a look at the world-wide patterns and records that are being broken...in both directions. VERY COLD in some places and BLAZING HOT, as well. Records falling....indicating something is going on. So deny what you will, but the climate doesn't care if you believe or deny. It's gonna do what it's gonna do, regardless of your belief or lack of it. It would be nice to think we can reverse the trend but we may have dithered too long and the change has been set in motion.
