President Obama sits on the famed Rosa Parks bus at the Henry Ford Museum following an event in Dearborn, Mich., April 18 (White House/Pete Souza)
I just sat in there for a moment and pondered the courage and tenacity that is part of our very recent history but is also part of that long line of folks who sometimes are nameless, oftentimes didnt make the history books, but who constantly insisted on their dignity, their share of the American dream.

that the life-energy that sustained it changes into another form. Maybe that is
what "spirit" is - just energy, conscious energy?

(47,992 posts)Re "she" and "her": What makes a person whoever/whatever that individual person is? What is it, without which, s/he would not be exactly who s/he is? Are these traits more temporary things, or more permanent things? Or a unique ratio of the two?
Though all things in "reality" are in one rate of change or another, wouldn't the truth consist in knowing as fully as possible which is which, so the extent to which one's own behavior is derived from honest and authentic awareness of truth would be the extent to which you are real and the more real one's being is, the less limited to time it is.
Lord Jesus and other avatars of truth are good examples of this. I don't know about the location of their consciousness, but I do know that their specific consciousnesses in- form -ed their behaviors which affect us now. The world is not the same world it would have been had they never existed, had they not done what they did. It's different in a VERY particular way that they authored, no matter what anyone thinks about that.
These things are true also of how our own consciousness in- forms behavior and, thus, affects others directly and indirectly, though it appears that our beings are somewhat more admixed with dross, entropy, in knowing the truth and are therefore less likely to affect much outside of our most direct personal relationships.

I worry deeply about our country. I am very sad for what the Republicans are apparently trying to do. They simultaneously claim Jesus and then put forth policies which the sermon on the mount would instantly falsify.
I hate today's Republicans. We need to get our message out. How do we do that when the media seems to think this is a game show, or a reality show. Well, CBS, ABC, NBC, Fox, and followers-on, this isn't a reality show for people's prurient entertainment. This is a situation which determines the future of our world. "The Museum immediately pulls you into the plight of the African-Americans during Segregation. A gripping film introduced the story, and then you enter a reconstructed street corner and see the famous bus where it all started. The lights lower, and visitors see the history repeating itself through the windows of the bus that have become movie screens, allowing you to peek inside the bus during that historic December day..."

Anyone today, who is young enough to have not lived through the civil right era, would find it hard to believe that such a time existed in this nation. (and still exists in some areas to some extent).
It's moments like this, that this photo is no longer a photo-op, but something to remind us all that that era of stupidity is not all that long ago. And it wouldn't take much, sadly, to return to it.
Thanks, Mr. President.

Yes, I remember all of what went on then: separate restrooms and water fountains for blacks and whites. Blacks were not allowed in white restaurants or movie theaters.

(53,784 posts)I don't put much stock in the Gallup or Rasmussen polls. They always trend repug (they most likely poll in repug areas, and then surprise, Romney is somehow tied or ahead of the President). It's quite incredible when you think about it, what with how the repugs have turned off women, half of the population, they're alienated Latinos with their anti-immigrant stances, and you know they're not getting the black and progressive white vote. So to anyone who believes those polls, I've got a bridge to sell. it's part of the repug strategy to send out and promote memes that say Romney is ahead in hopes that it energizes their base and discourages dem voters. I'm not buying their poll results.

(86 posts)What are the chances that this is the actual bus? Unlikely. What are the chances that the quotation above is actual, i.e., offered sincerely? Unlikely. Two functions of propaganda: the replica/the similar/the approximate bus pointing at an emotionally-charged historical event, coupled with a recent intervening at that site aiming to recontextualize those events with a current overlay: "We are just like Rosa Parks...pushing forward and fighting the good fight!"
Fight? Fighting? How about we stop the wars and invest those billions/trillions into the United States.
I'd believe Obama's statement if Americans weren't perpetually told to go to the back of the bus the past 12 years (unless of course one is part of the ultra-rich elite class, bankers, and their military industrial complex).

(50,349 posts)used by Rosa Parks, snippet taken from the answer to the FAQ question, "How do you know that this is the actual bus on which Rosa Parks was arrested?" found on the Henry Ford Museum site:
"Mr. Lifson contacted retired employees of the bus company including Mrs. Margaret Cummings, widow of the former bus station manager Charles Homer Cummings. Mrs. Cummings provided a scrapbook of newspaper clippings that her husband had kept during and after the Montgomery bus boycott of 1955-56.
National City Lines (which was the parent company of the Montgomery City Bus Lines) had employed a clipping service to clip and save any newspaper articles about the companys bus service. Charles Cummings had kept the scrapbook of newspaper articles from the 1955-56 Montgomery bus boycott. Next to articles describing the arrest of Rosa Parks, he wrote "#2857" and "Blake/#2857." James Blake was the bus driver who had Rosa Parks arrested. Mr. Cummings relatives confirm that he jotted down the bus number because he felt the events were so important.
With this information in hand, Mr. Lifson consulted with the Motor Bus Society of Clark, New Jersey, a nonprofit historical organization. Their research into the records of the General Motors Corp. showed that bus Serial Number 1132 was produced in Pontiac, Michigan, in March 1948. It was a TDH-3610 (Transit Diesel Hydraulic Transmission, 36 passenger, Model 10) delivered to the National City Lines (NCL) of Chicago, Illinois.
NCL records indicate that the bus was assigned Coach #2857 and sent to Terre Haute, Indiana. In 1954 it was transferred from Terre Haute to Montgomery, Alabama."

However, bus company employees knew that the bus with GM Serial Number 1132 and coach ID #2857 was reputed to be the Rosa Parks bus. When the Montgomery City Bus Lines Company retired bus #2857 in the early 1970s, Roy H. Summerford of Montgomery bought it. At the time, company employees told him that it was the Rosa Parks bus. Mr. Summerford and his descendents kept the bus in a field and used it to store lumber and tools. "
