Breivik testifies he wanted to handcuff then film the decapitation of the former prime minister whom

he thought would be on the island.

12.31pm: Breivik has described al-Qaida as "methodological role models" and said he learned a lot from them. What he is describing now sounds eerily similar to their methods, as he says he planned to film a decapitation of former prime minister Harlem Brundtland, who was on Utøya island.

He hates Muslims but views al-Qaida as a role model for his actions.

or an outsider group is a common feature of peoples who engage in genocidal behaviors.

Envy, appropriation of some desired quality, and casting out of the remains are characteristics of human aggression. It's ritualized in religious practices such as scapegoating and has broader cultural aspects. It can be seen in the practice in the U.S. of naming sports teams and attack helicopters after Native American tribes we exterminated with particular violence. Please see Rene Girard's book, "Violence and the Sacred."
